Madeline explains how to play D&D in three simple steps: The Setup, The Decision, and The Result.

Dungeons and Dragons is a game all about telling stories, becoming a character, and having fun with your friends. It’s set in a fantasy world of swords and sorcery, but whether you want to join a pirate gang, explore a jungle, or take part in a political plot is entirely up to you. Everything is your decision, from what you look like, to how you act, to what happens next. The dice just help you along. Most of all though, it’s about spending time with your nearest and dearest, sharing dwarven ales, and making memories.

This setup, decision, result summary is a nice concise way of describing the flow of the game. First I've seen Madeline on a D&D video here and she did a great job. Clear spoken and a great accent.

I really liked this way of putting it. You can do pretty much whatever you want, but there are only 3 simple steps to structure the actions.

I would even argue that you could simplify it even further.

1. This is your situation.
2. What do you do?
Repeat:
1. This is your (new) situation.
2. What do you do?

just realised ive been playing this game without knowing in year 3 - 5, except it was outside, you physically did everything you wanted and to explain the game, we called it 'be whoever you want'. that sums it up

thanks for the explaination. I had no idea what the game 'really' is before watching (now I understand a little bit). I've been on twitch and seen people play DnD using paper, and 3D computer graphics, and 2D computer graphics, so I had no idea how the actually game really works.
