How (not) to write for strings - Easy tutorial for better string arrangements

In this short tutorial mainly for beginners I want to show you how to write for strings to get better string arrangements. Even if you are working with String ensemble patches try to see those strings in sections and write little lines for each section.

If you have questions please just leave them in the comments.

I use two libraries in this tutorial:
The string sections from Jaeger from @AudioImperia
and
The String Ensemble longs from Orchestral Essentials 1 from @ProjectSAMCinematicSampling

Hopefully after this tutorial you find writing for strings and arranging strings a little easier.

A huge THANK YOU goes out to my first Patron:

Exactly how I educated myself before participating in the first #scorerelief competition and in addition watching Christian Henson's "3 Days Composing" mini series, where he talks about thinking of string instruments like "fingers" and breaks down the concept of authentic arrangement in a similar fashion. You condensed it even more, great job!

This is great. I definitely needed the reminder about passing notes! Also, I hope you do a tutorial about composing choir arrangements and working with vocals in general

Great video, Martin! Very important and useful points there (I know I am lazy and guilty regarding this) :-)

Excellent! Divisi made simple! It's already so much better than the block chords. If you added what Dan Keen recently suggested – doubling up with tremolo'd strings and adding harmonics for 1st strings – and what Chris Henson said, i.e. bottom "dweller" sub basses from synths an octave below the double basses, I guess we all can arrive at the nearest approximation to their top tier Spitfire Audio library or Hans Zimmer string library. Thanks, great "how to", short, nice, sweet, educational!

Hey Martin thanks for sharing your video, I do this already but would be interested in what VSTs you use, I’ve just created 7 orchestral tracks using BBC SO but I’m not happy with the string sound and think I should combine it with something else to give it a Warner bodied sound but don’t know what to use. Also, I’m only just learning dynamic automation so is really like to see your other videos. At the end of this one you point to invisible links and can’t see links anywhere else ? I’ve subscribed so hope to see some more of your videos soon. Many thanks x Indigo

very informative! How do you apply modulation afterwards? I see you recording over the music but I don't know what to select before recording so as not to overwrite the musicnif you understand what I mean
