Chris saying, “Her milkshake brings all the boys to the yard” took me out for a minute. Great advice

Hey Chris. Good to see your channel still going when so many others fell apart after GOT.

Is it completely independent of a character's sex though? I tend to think it is just judging by the audience's reactions. It looks to me like the number one way to get a character called a "Mary Sue" by the layman is to make her so good at fighting, for example. And I think that's harder to believe that a girl in cosmetics is gonna be kicking ass without extra exposition.... in the same way, we might need extra to establish why a man would make a most excellent nurturing and hyper-sensitive type.

I'm not the type to judge the fairness of it but I do think it requires a whole lot more work to establish a female character as a badass without losing half the audience in the same way it requires a whole lot more to establish a male character who is like the ultimate tender sweetheart without losing half the audience. It's why I don't think the "Gary Sue" thing is as much of a thing as "Mary Sue" because if we see an Arnold Schwarzenneger or Sylvester Stallone kicking ass, it's halfway believable just based on the fact that they're super buff men that have trouble saying much more than a few one-liners here and there. :-D It's easier to take for granted why they might be good at fighting, e.g., than a girl in make-up.

Excellent! Really curious about the book characters- enthusiasm builds almost unbearably!

That was interesting. I thought a Mary Sue was when the author put themselves into the book so they could do stuff they couldn't do in real life. Or is that just in fanfic?
Notifications to my e-mail have now stopped :( But I check YouTube every day so I'm trying to keep up. Keep 'em coming!

so .. is it impossible for a very strong character to exist. or is it more that maybe they exist but it would not be entertaining to watch a movie/read a book about them?

Then why are highly skilled MCs like John Wick, Dominic Toretto, Jason Bourne so well liked? I can't tell what their flaws are, they always win, and can't die. Jack Reacher is like this too.

Why is this only bad when women do it?

A boy names Sue? but really, That was one thing that got me about Rey too. The only training she had was with Luke which was what? 3 days. I could understand If Leia had trained her but to the best of my knowledge, that was never mentioned on the movie. In some respects Rheagar was written that way too.

Every writer needs to watch the last airbender series to learn how to write characters

Rey isn’t a Mary Sue. Please don’t spread misinformation and if you actually think she is, please educate yourself on writing.
