"Ope, gonna squeeze right by ya...."

As a German, I always apologise whenever I have to go past someone in a store. Maybe it's because I've lived in a tiny village my whole life and my parents taught me to do that lol

I'd rather they question my unnecessary politeness than my potential rudeness...

This is a regional thing in the US. At my company we have a manager that Came from across the country and she was shocked at how rude people in my state were. I explained to her “if anyone looks you in the eye or talks to you, their going to ask you for money.” I have family all over the us and there are parts where people are so friendly and talkative. Really each town/city/state has its own culture:

Omg I went to Germany for six months and the number of times I said « entschuldigung » is astonishing. 😂

In America, it is very normal to greet people when you see them. ( even strangers ), say excuse me, or smile/ say hello to people you pass on the street!

Haha, this is hilarious! I love how when we go to Deutschland we can just go to the front because there is no line. As you know, here we'll form up a line for absolutely no reason. Haha!

Wait, it’s the most normal thing to apologize when you’re near someone or squeezing through a crowd of people. Where in Germany was she that she thinks that’s not normal here?

I’m from the US and I apologize or say “excuse me” for nearly everything. I also grew up calling everyone “sir” or “ma’am”. Thankfully, I noticed right away that it was awkward, but it was still a bit difficult to break the habit.

Lol, when I was in Greece, I said the same thing. They just looked at me and smiled. Like, What???

As a Canadian, it’s ‘I’m so sorry, can I just squeeze by you?’

Sometimes apologizing is not about something you gave done but compassion or empathy

I was raised and born in the US in the late 50's. My late mother would slap me from Heaven if I did not excuse myself for not excusing myself.

Here in Switzerland we are the super apologetics. That's why you can tell immediately if someone isn't Swiss. We often find that Germans are rude.(Germany is our neighboring country.)

A European who got used to being polite goes home. 🤦‍♂️
I was in Europe when in the service almost 50 years ago. You had to be careful following someone through a door. They will typically just squeeze through and let the door slam shut in your face. Here we are situationally aware and will typically hold the door long enough for the person behind you to get a hand on it.

One of my favorite things about Germany is nobody needlessly talking to me. I can just keep my headphones in and the rest of the world out.
