Gluten is a naturally occurring protein that is found in grains such as wheat barley and rye. Those foods that are made from these ingredients include bread, cereals, noodles, confectionary, pizza etc.

Gluten proteins are elastic and that’s why is suitable for making bread which can increase shelf life, give it rise and strength for a better taste and texture.

Gluten protein is resistant and often not able to be fully digested in our intestines, this can result in certain immune responses when it permeates through the walls of the intestines into the body.

These immune responses are also know as gluten intolerance and can be categorized into 3 segments. Individuals who are suffering from these conditions should adopt a gluten free diet.

Firstly will be Celiac disease. It is an auto immune disease which can be caused by both genetic and environmental factors. It is mainly an inflammatory disorder of the small intestine. Consuming gluten in such a case will result in intestinal cells being damaged and can lead to a host of gastrointestinal and other related issues.

Next will be allergy to wheat, which is abnormal immune response to wheat based products, not just gluten alone. Symptoms can range from being just mild nausea to as serious as life threatening breathing difficulties.

There are also incidences where individuals do not have both celiac disease and wheat allergy but seem to respond poorly to gluten, these are known as Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity or NCGS. They usually experience fatigue, migraine or joint pains upon consuming gluten.

So the question is, should everyone avoid a gluten free diet and does it make it me healthier by doing so?

If you do not have the above conditions or any health issues that your medical practitioner advise you against consuming gluten, there is actually not a need to specifically avoid it.

But why are there reports where individuals who go on a gluten free diet indeed feel healthier? Well one of the main reasons is because gluten originates from wheat and grain based products which are used to make processed foods such as cakes, pizzas or batter for deep fried food. Going gluten free might inadvertently omit such foods from the diet and with the elimination of such high calorie, sugar and fat dense foods might help improve one’s BMI, improve alertness and alleviate muscular and joint discomforts.

There might also be the element of testimonials and online marketing of real life accounts which stand by the benefits of going gluten free, thereby increasing its popularity and possibly creating an impression that this form of diet is effective.

So in conclusion, for the purpose of achieving weight and fitness goals, there is really not a necessity to adopt a gluten free diet, where research has not returned any conclusive results that it actually makes one healthier. Do also note that there are gluten free foods which still contain a fair amount of sugar, sodium and ingredients that can be lead to weight gain, scrutinizing the nutrition facts and ingredient contents is key.

And I do notice that certain gluten free foods tend to be more steeply priced than others.

So if you do not have any associated gluten intolerances, then a gluten based diet is safe. Eating whole foods, avoiding processed ones and regular exercising are essential to safely reduce that waistline and improve your fitness levels.
