Some people can't eat gluten for medical reasons, but a lot of people in Los Angeles don't eat gluten because someone in their yoga class told them not to. Jimmy wondered how many of these people even know what gluten is, so we sent a camera crew out to a popular exercise spot here in LA and asked people who are gluten-free a simple question: "What is gluten?" #PedestrianQuestion

I work at a bagel shop, and people come up all the time asking if we have gluten free bagels. When I say no they get all angry then buy 18 bagels. I don't understand.

As a person with the Celiac disease I can assure you that it's annoying as hell to listen to peoples ignorance when it comes to gluten. And this one lady that said it was in rice, damn it's annoying. Every day I listen to people that maintain a gluten free diet for no particular reson.
Someone even thinks that the only thing that contains gluten is bread, so eating pasta is safe (yes, I've experienced this).

So, unless you have the Celiac disease, eat gluten, tons of it.

It's a protein inside of some grains (wheat, barley, rye) which causes the grain to stick together. And while for some people this is fine and doesn't cause problems, if you have celiac or an allergy/sensitivity then it will basically cause your gut to eat itself trying to attack the gluten. Because your gut thinks gluten is a germ.

Nuts, rice, oats, and other grains do not have gluten unless they were processed with gluten.

Gluten is also the thing that makes donuts worth eating. *cries*

These kind of people have both helped and hurt the celiac community lol. They’ve helped because my brands and restaurants have more gluten free choices, but it’s also hurt us because some people think it’s just a fad for us and aren’t careful about cross contamination

I'm diagnosed celiac - and I often get treated like crap when I eat out when I ask for gf foods.  It has gotten to the point that I think I should carry a doctor's note around with me.  I also get charged a premium, too.  I often feel like just not eating out anymore- too much money, you're looked on as a nuisance following a trend and you see waiters rolling their eyes.

And I know what gluten is.  It is the protein in wheat, rye and barley.  It's what makes pizza crust chewy (and yummy) and what makes up the foamy head on beer.

Thanks for doing this!! As someone with celiac, I'm beyond tired of seeing stupid people with no real reason go gluten-free cause they think it's "trendy". Gluten in a normal person does not have adverse health effects.

This isn't just in L.A it's everywhere. It just goes to show you how much people will mindlessly follow trends to fit in. Gluten affects maybe 2% of all people in the world and that's mostly because it gives them stomach problems. Studies were done to show that gluten free diets help you lose weight, but let's not forget that correlation does not equal causation.

During said studies they didn't offer the subjects gluten free alternatives to bread and rice or what have you. Instead they had to avoid eating bread all together, which when you look at it that way, no shit they lost weight if they stopped eating bread.
