As someone who quit his job to pursue indie game development a year ago, I agree with everything you're saying fully. Great video, and I like the new greenscreen effect. Beats the basement backdrop. :P

Man, I'm just gonna say... You have such a great way of saying important things, someone should pin a pair of wings on your back. I just started watching your videos a couple of days ago, and I'm hooked. Best source of information I could ask for. Hats off to you sir

Thanks for mentioning the thing with the personality. I think a lot of people underestimate how important it is to sell themselfes well and I think people should talk more about personal development. It helps to define yourself. Btw I really like your vids

I started building my first game (and learning to use a game engine from scratch) about four years ago. I have not finished that game. Then I stopped it for another and am close to finishing this one. I wont be quitting my day job soon.
Thanks Thomas, you have given me some great advice.

THANK YOU so much for this video! I am only 38 seconds in, and I'm so thankful that you are going to address this issue. I have struggled with this question almost daily.

Definitely can relate. I've been a finalist in indie game competitions but haven't made a single cent yet. I didn't quit my job though I was made redundant and couldn't get more work.

I’ve been asked this question many times, (I sold my software co in 2005), what I did was built my first software and marketed it until the income from it matched my old salary and then I still saved for 6 months then quit and haven’t been back. Ppl will say, “but I don’t have time to do both”, and there’s your answer. If you can l’t get up at 4 am and code till 8, then again after work, you have no passion or time management. Keep your day job.

"You've got to be talented in every way, you have to know how to do EVERYTHING, and if you cant, I'm sorry, you're a loser!"

This cracked me up!

The main problem is, having a good game, doesn't guarantee that you will have success with a game. It is a HUGE gamble to quit your job and pursue indie dev. If you are smart, you get a job that improves your skills to become an indie dev. Like programming? Great, be a daytime web developer. Like art? Great do some concept art in whatever industry. Like design? Great design systems (yes, other industries need "game designers" too). Like ui, and effects? Great, graphics designer or visual fx designer is your thing. When you come home from work, work on your game!! Work on the weekends on your game. Make a prototype. And IF your game gets recognized on kickstarter or whatever, THEN quit your job. If you don't believe me, simply go to a google a bit on how many games are released per day and how many of them are successful. Or go to a game jam and see how many talented people you encounter who will never, never find success. The people who see here on youtube are the 0.1%. Please remember that before throwing your life away.

I come from a marketing and networking background and just started making and I was like I feel like coming from an entrepreneurial background is going to help me have an edge. I saw your video and when you mentioned the books I was like that's so true. Good video man. Good luck! Keep gaming!

For spotlighting what you're good at, how do you put a spotlight on programming, since it's not seen?

You said that when you had a really good kickstarter campaign, you were able to quit your job and pursue it full time. Does that mean you used the funds to pay rent/food to provide for yourself while you completed the game?
