Whenever someone has told me "It makes sense that you feel this way" I have started crying because I was finally understood

Came for advice on how a partner should validate my feelings, but stayed for the realization that I can do better, too! The only problem is when a partner is unwilling to share their true feelings...that makes it pretty hard to validate them.

My father used to model this beautifully. He was the best listener I ever knew.
Whenever life was getting on my last nerve, I'd call my Dad and he'd say why don't you come by and have some tea with me and we can discuss it.
And he would let me vent away. And he would say things like, that sounds really tough, and I can imagine that that would be so frustrating. I'm really sorry that you are going through this sweetie, it must be very difficult for you.
And by the time that the tea and cookies were done, I would be feeling better and more like I could get out there and take on the world once again.
Never once did he ever tell me what I should be doing to "fix" things.
Boy, I miss my Dad.😢
If I ever could have found one like him, I probably would have married him.😊

"We think we're protecting the closeness in the relationship - when in reality, we're killing it."

Dang. Got me.

My partner tells me that my feelings are wrong and that I need to grow up because I'm immature for feeling a certain way. It's so frustrating. I don't feel like I can be honest with him anymore about how I feel, because I always end up being the one with the problem, not him.

This is fabulous advice for dealing with people in general - if you have a teen, being able to validate their feelings without necessarily agreeing with their choices or their perception of reality is a lifesaver!

Jimmy, as a 75 year old woman with two adult children, I will say that you are truly a delight!

I've been told I need to work on this, I am a natural debater and go into disagreements from a logical standpoint, so this is all foreign to me. I'm in my 40's and never once heard of this concept before. Thanks for putting this out there!

Warning: “I can see how you might feel that way.” (paraphrased, not exact quote) may be used in a placating or condescending manner if not used mindfully.

This is so so so amazing, Particularly the last minute. Giving context, and explaining intent does not "fix" the emotional issue, it only invalidates the hurt being presented. My partner does this all the time, and he has the most wonderfully genuine intent. Yet when I try to explain this concept to him, he gets defensive, and, again, explains his intent. He steamrolls right by the point by giving yet another example of it.

Talking about your feelings is actually very important but what people need to understand is that no one can rationalize and even sympathize or even talk to someone who is very disrespectful and that is where people fail to provide their own boundaries so they don’t fall into the blame as well…

My parents invalidate my feelings a lot. Makes it painful to share them. I try to do better with my students so they don’t end up the same.

Love this! You are helping me be able to explain to my husband how to validate my feelings....something that's been missing for 20 years. I keep sending him your videos. Thanks Jimmy.

I’ve been married for 19 years, and I have put up with these very same issues only every now and then up until 2017 and he cheated and I found out and ever since then all of the same issues got more intense!! And now we’re completely disconnected but going through the motions I feel because of our kids. I send him marriage helper videos- he never even makes an attempt to watch them, I just now found your videos and I’m setting here wishing that he would actually listen to just ONE of them….. one person can only try to explain in so many different ways, there are only so many words that one can use, there is only so much hope that one person can have, and there’s only so much that one person can take……..

I’m MAD MAD MAD about you Jimmy!!! I laugh myself silly!! You seriously rock!! This is the most ingenious way to educate people about life fundamentals.

But most of all - you make me hopeful! Is it really possible for someone’s eyes to be opened and their heart to be opened. Because there have been too many times where I have given up in dispair.

Thank you for everything that YOU do!!! Never ever stop!!!

This is such a great video. The toughest part during conflict is actually thinking like this sometimes! If you can stop, catch your breath and approach the conversation with hearing each other, wow that’s powerful stuff

We just had this conversation the other day. We're still working on it 😊
