Have had the 2018 Mini i7 16 GB RAM 256 GB SSD + Black Magic eGPU + 2 x 4K & 1 x 1080P monitors + Davinci Resolve + full Adobe CC suite for a few months now and love it. Even without the eGPU it is pretty fast, very quiet and cool even when running plenty of producivity apps at once. It is the very effective cooling system that makes it work so well I believe.
Can't wait to upgrade go the new Pro so we can do some 3D, the one area where the limited internal and external GPUs fall down. Blender is too sluggish alas.

My first Mac was one of those $499 Mac mini G4s and I loved it. These are too expensive.

Thank you for the review! The baseline is fine for me ... 4 cores at 3.6 GHz apiece (14.4 gHz of processing stream!) ... 128 GB SSD is tight but with a small external SSD it will work. All I run is the standard Apple apps and pieces of Xcode projects ... perform simple calculations ... with some simple office work using the free Apple iWork suite. So, the i3-8100 will work fine. (I may upgrade the memory myself.) Currently, I am using the iCloud for sharing between other Macs/iPhones, and I use a HDD for local Time Machine backups. May get a second screen ... two screens are nice! Already have the Apple bluetooth keyboard and Apple trackpad 2 ... but now they don't match the space grey 'color'! I mostly just need quiet. My iWork usage and little Xcode projects with the 4 core i3 should equate to a super quiet environment ... probably not near the thermal 'boundary'! No, not a pro user ... the Mac mini just fits what I do. And it is all Mac … all the time!

It's too big and too expensive. If the (fanless) Intel NUC didn't exist, the mini would be considered great.
