I own a few Mac products but the overclocked 2012 mac mini is still by far my favourite model (even more than my 2013 Mac pro). The customizability for the Mac mini 2012 is simply unmatched. I ended up upgrading the ram to 16gb, the storage to a Samsung 4tb ssd, I upped to an Intel core i7 and used opencore to run Ventura. It's my tv computer since I use my Mac pro 2013 as a work station but the Mac mini 2012 is a hidden gem.

2024 Black Friday sale - picked up a 2018 Intel mini with 32GB RAM and 128GB internal SSD for just under $400 shipped out-the-door with Amazon Prime. Upgraded the shipped Monterey 12 all the way to Sonoma 14. Tricked it out with multiple external SSDs (and booting from them, to save wear/tear on the tiny internal SSD) and 2x USB docks for more ports and 2nd monitor. Connected the builtin HDMI to my 4k living room TV and the dock connects to a 1366x768 TV that I basically found in the trash, but still works. This little PC was a great deal, does everything I need it to, and should continue to run Linux even after MacOS support runs out. I can even upgrade it to 64GB RAM down the road if needed. Can't do that with M1 and up.

I have mine for 3 years and I am planning to upgade the RAM as it struggles with some apps like high end photo editors and external plugins in Logic - is it worth going to 32 Gb Ram in your opinion or is 16 Gb enough, considering the quality of the GPU. Would appreciate your perspective. Thanks.

Do you think the i3 base model is strong enough for coding and development? Plus maybe some Figma. Considering you can upgrade ram yourself down the road for cheap.

I picked up a mint 2018, I7 with 32gb ram and 256gb harddisk for 190 dollars! I already have a M1 Mini but this one will be used in my second studio!

I finally made a decision, and I find the 2018 to be irrelevant today. The price evoluation is much worse than the MacPro 2013. They ask like 450€ for a i7/32GB, where you can get a MP2013 for 300€. The MP is totally upgradable (CPU/RAM/SSD) and usually comes with 64GB installed. For 15€ you upgrade the cheapest 4-core MP to a 10-core. The D500 graphics is 5 times as fast as UHD 630, and that is for a single GPU, and you get 2.

Debating with myself on whether to pick-up a late 2018 Mac Mini or newer...I like everything about the 2018 EXCEPT the built-in storage drive...if that goes...yikes.

Would you recommend this Mac if one already has an eGPU, for example?
Been thinking about buying one myself for a while, trying to convince myself not to, but since Apple Silicon won't fit to my workflow for quite a while, it's not an easy decision to make. These Mac minis are surprisingly expensive in the used market too if you want 1 TB and especially 2 TB of storage, likely because I assume most of these machines don't often fit to workloads where you need to have a ton of space locally on the machine.

Given I've seen M1 minis for less money I'd have to say it's not worth it unless you must have Windows on it as well.
