Film to Digital WITHOUT a Scanner! 🎞️

Yesterday I was going through some old boxes and found these negatives my dad took on his film camera when we were kids. I don’t have a scanner, but still wanted to see the photos and I did using this method 🎞️

1. Choose your photo
2. Grab a light or an iPad at maximum brightness and put your film on it
3. Grab your camera and take a photo
4. Bring it into photoshop and make some adjustments
5. Done!

The results are not perfect and they’re not as good as they would be with a proper scanner or film holders but this is super fast and it still works. As for adjustments I’m making, let me know if you would want a video on this!

Also, let me know if you try this!

Digital camera scanning it's an absolutely viable option capable of wonderful results, just do it properly

i use my sony alpha 6000 to scan my negatives.
i recommend a good 50mm and a macro converter. also use a tripod and a remote. getting the focus right and the sensor parallel to the negative. you also need something to flatten the negatives, a lot of times they are a little curved.

Use a lens hood to hold the negative (it keeps the film away from the screen and it makes it so the pixels are not visible). Tripod and f8. Enlager lenses are 5$ and are great for scanning

better with daylight or direct light, not a screen, because with screen you will get the pixel squares in the photo.

Guys use a macro lens, it works better. I have a sony A1 and it worked wonderfully.

DSLR scanning has been a pretty common practice. I would recommend getting a copy stand and a macro lens for the camera so you can get a very level scan of your negatives. Getting negative holders might also be essential too, as they keep the negative flat against the light board to remove as much distortion as possible. Also it hurt me to see you hold the negatives that way haha. Getting fingerprints on them is a no go and is a pain to clean, if you're ever going to shoot film a lot a pair of anti static gloves and a rocket blower makes touching up negatives easier upon scanning.

If you use a macro lens and a tripod, and a light with good cri, youll get better results than some scanners.

Using this method actually gives a great retro look so I'd probably go for this one.

Btw I'm looking for suggestions. Dslr or mirrorless cam?

They are negatives, not photos. We used to always get these, before digital cameras, when we took our photos to be developed. Results would be best if a photo is actually developed from the negative the old-fashion way. Not that your way did not work.

Just find a way to make it flat, use a macro lens, and avoid fingerprints, hand oil, and dust.

Buy an Epson flat scanner for film or an even better plustek just for 35mm, this way of scanning it is bad

I Don’t Wanna sound dumb, but can someone explain how come the light doesn’t damage the film in these instances, I’m new to film photography 😂

I do photography, have done for decades... Worst tutorial EVER! To the lay, this reads, "Take a photo of negatives, do some photoshop magic, bam photo!" 🤦

They’re called negatives, not photos. They’re what photos are developed from. Spot the pre digital era kid acting like he’s a pro.

How do you scan 150 pages ( legal documents, double sided, 8 pages per page) . Everything looks so simple and easy via youtube...
