2020 Toyota Rav4 First Oil Change with Filter Teardown

DIYDave does the break-in oil change on the new 2020 RAV4. He'll also cut open the factory-installed oil filter to see if any "break-in" machine debris is present. He'll also try to sort out the changes in part numbers for the Rav4 oil filter, which have changed at least twice since the car was built!

EDIT: The filter number I use shows up as "doesn't fit" on Amazon but I know it does. The superseding part numbers have confused Amazon's database, I think!

Good video but I think you may have the flow pattern through the filter backward. Oil is pumped through the ring of holes at the periphery and flows out of the filter via the center opening.

If you are worried about any potential oil leaking and the gravel shield access cover is blocking. Drill a 1/4” hole on the access cover and countersink the burs. So any fluid leak that’s trapped on the access will leak into the driveway cement.

Nice video. I’ll let the dealer do mine on this car though after watching this. On a side note, I always try loosing the filter first on new cars before cracking the drain. Sometimes the factory puts them on ungodly tight. Same rule for differentials. Undo the top fill plug first.

Next time you change your oil, replace your drain plug with a Fumoto F-133 drain valve. I have run them for years on Ford diesels and Subarus with no problems. Never have to worry about replacing the gaskets or stripping threads and you don't need a wrench once the valve is installed.

I had the same issue, searched all over and had trouble finding the 0W-16.
Went with mobil 1 and a mobile 1 filter.

I use a Torque Wrench on the drain plug. Just got my first Toyota(2023 RAV4) heard the Torque was 30 ft lbs, that seems high, can anyone verify the torque ?

I would be careful about buying really cheap oil filters even if they are branded as Toyota... Counterfeits are more common than you or I want to believe especially from websites like eBay.

Yes, the wrench that is designed for the housing on the cartridge system will not always work for the spin on canister. A strap wrench should work or inserting something between the filter and the other wrench you tried that was too big might also have worked.

That filter from the factory was made in China?! Yipes!

Also the official Toyota filters are supposed to be pre-lubed.

Anyway, great job! I always like seeing someone pay attention to details.

I never use a tool to tighten a spin-on filter. Just put on as tight as I can get it with my bare hand.

Awesome video! I am very curious though…I was told never to tighten oil filters with a wrench unless its the factory torque spec. Is this how its supposed to be done by Toyota?
And Would going that tight with that wrench cause any spots on the filter or mating surface to be too tight and make the seal(s) fail?
