Thank you for making this. My father passed when I was young, so I don't really have anyone to ask about stuff like this.

My dad was a mechanic for a good portion of his life, built his own muscle cars, etc etc. I wish he took half as good of care of the cars he handed down to me than you do. Father of the year and a responsible car owner for sure. Great video, great general advice! This is a gold standard DIY oil change video and I've done more than my share of my own oil changes. I came here just to get more of an idea of what the Rav4 looks like under the hood, I really enjoyed watching this. <3

Very well done, I like your easy going style. It is obvious you care about taking care of what you own, and doing the job right. Your pride in that is obvious and I like to see it. I know your daughters will be taught to do the same.

A couple things. This is a good video but here are a couple Tips to add. After getting everything you need ready and before going under the car, loosen the oil filler cap and set it on it's side on the hole to prevent anything from falling into the engine but mostly it allows the oil to drain a little faster and easier.. Like the guy below mentioned, don't put the full recommended amount of oil in in this case 4.8 quarts put in 4 and a 1/3 qrts in put the cap on the filler hole and then try the engine running a bit to check for leaks after turning the engine off. Put the vehicle back to level ground and after 3 or 4 minutes, check the oil level again. and add some until the dipstick shows a level halfway between the two marks on the dipstick. As oil warms up it expands so a little more than halfway between the marks is ideal and too much oil is almost as bad as too little. Also at your next gas fill up and after waiting a few minutes after the engine has been off, check the oil level again and if it's okay, check it every other oil change or every month or so.

“Toyotas are so easy to service there is no reason not too”. I couldn’t agree more!

Just bought my wife a 2024 Rav4 Hybrid 2 days ago. Plan on keeping a long time. Thanks for the outstanding video. Will change oil daily as a precaution.

Nice video thanks! Might be worth mentioning to initially fill a bit below the recommended quantity. Then wait and check level and fill up the the requested amount. So you don’t overfill when you didn’t drain completely.
Overfilling can damage your engine.

Thanks for posting this! I used to change my oil on previous cars...until... I drove over my ramps 1 too many times. That gets old quick. I decided paying someone to do it was worth the money. But since I got the RAV4, which doesn't need ramps, I figured it's time to save some $. Thanks again!

Just bought a 21. The way you operate mirrors my approach. This was helpful. Thank you

Thanks for the video. Didn't even know about the crush washers didn't see that on any of the other rav4 oil changing videos. Ordered some just in case. Will be using the tip on tightening the bolts too. First time changing the oil myself and you made it look easy.

Great video. Word of wisdom the crush washer is supposed to be changed with every oil change, They are super cheap no reason not to buy 4 or more at a time to keep a stock on hand. This will not only prevent oil leaks around the plug as the plug and pan make a mating impression on the washer but after a crush washer is used once the second time the torque spec will be off which can lead to over tightening and stripped threads.

Great video throttle on John! I just did my wife’s 30 K maintenance on her 2019 RAV4 highbred XSE! I am with you two times they overfilled at the dealer..if they can’t get that right how do they do the technical work! I am with you that money goes in my pocket as good as the dealers! You’re doing it right a flat rate mechanic won’t do what you do?? The more they get out the more they make! I try to buy OEM whenever possible I’ve had good luck that way!

I have a '97 4Runner that still runs and looks like new. Besides preventative maintenance like LBJ and a timing belt, the only thing that actually went bad was a fuel pump on year 22. I can confirm Toyota's seem to last forever with basic maintenance. I can also confirm that BMW does not. The wallet over thickness light comes on nearly every payday. Anyhow, done with that. Sticking with Toyota products from now on. Hoping our new RAV and Tacoma additions have the same track record as the old 4Runner.

I'm pretty sure 0W-16 only comes in synthetic.
Toyota OEM filters are pre-lubed. No need to apply oil to the gasket. Other brands that are not pre-lubed do require that so good to mention it in the video.

You hand tightened the filter. You don't hand tighten the drainplug. Using a wrench, even though it's not a power tool, is wrench tight...not hand tight.

Just below the full mark on the dip-stick is good. If you warm up the engine to full operating temperature it would likely be at the full mark.

Good job! One of the better oil change videos.

Great video. Love how you emphasize how easy it is to work on Toyotas. Those are some nice tires btw.

2015 Tundra and 2023 RAV4 in my fleet. Also have a Honda but was a Ford fanboy most of my life. Owning fords, I was always under the impression that all vehicles have lots of issues. My tundra taught me that Toyota is worth the extra $ and the reliability and quality is real.

Thank you for taking the time to do this. This was an amazing very clear video and we all appreciate it, sir. I just got a 2020 XL premium and I’ll be changing my oil very soon.

You can add a little oil to the filter to aid in priming. The element will absorb it and make the light go out quicker.
