Jeep stalling problem.

Another attempt at trying to figure out why Jeeps stall at stop lights and stop signs and any other time you slow down. Haven't had the jeep stall while driving, but a lot of times it seemed like it wanted to. Sorry for the background noise didn't know the radio was that loud.

It's a rub through on the wiring harness, wjere it hoes around the the rear of the valve cover and rests on the sharp threads of a protruding head stud, it wears through the plastic loom, the wite insulation, and the exposed wire shorts out on the head, randomly. Poke an Inspection mirror or camera back there and check the bottom of the loom, if there's the slightest damage, it's shorting out (Plastic gets weak and flimsy when hot

Check your battery posts, make sure your clamps are good and tight. Crappy stock battery clamps will only tighten so much after a while and you will need to purchase lead battery post caps and then install your clamps over the posts as tight as you can get them.

I have had this problem for 8 years and I have replaced everything you did and much more and the problem remains. I am convinced that it cannot be fixed. Jeep must have deliberately designed an incurable problem into it.

I had the same exact issue and it was fixed by a simple oil change. The mechanic said that Jeeps burn oil pretty quickly and getting an oil change promptly will prevent this problem. I was hesitant that this solution was too simple but miraculously, it completely fixed my stalling issue.

I have a 97 Grand Cherokee Laredo, same problem, i started by cleaning all of the ground wires, on the block, and body frame, and found the wire from the battery to the block was bad. it was broken inside the insulation. The factory put a splice in the ground wire, from the alt to the ground wire to the battery, replace the ground wire, and no more codes and stalling. good luck.

Hi buddy I had the same problem on a 97 Jeep 4.0 I just about did the same thing you did until I found a bad ground lead from the alternator/body frame to engine I accidentally move the wire when the engine was running and it started to stutter. I checked after I removed the wire and found no continuity.

Well once again I'm back and I've had to make new modifications. Threw a piston skirt and now engine doesn't run properly. So guys I finally just went ahead and bought a new zero mile engine and am installing it throughout this Labor Day weekend. Hope you guys figure out what's going on with your stalling issues. It seems to be different things that's causing this. I swapped out three computers in hopes that it would stop it and eventually for me it was just the injectors being clogged. After replacing so many parts the only thing I haven't replaced is the WIRING. 20 bucks that all of our problems has to do with the wiring! These engines run hot and when I replaced some wiring in my harness they were crispy as f***!

Maybe too late but my 05 tj also had a rough idle. I did a vacuum leak test (google to make a cheap homemade one) and found the issue. Vacuum leak at the rear pcv valve, replaced and it idle smooth since.

I solved it. After all that go get yourself a stick of DYNAMITE take car to the nearest open field and blow it up.. my jeep had the same issues.. I also had a full set of hair at some point..

Throwing parts at an undiagnosed problem always disappoints, IME. My '01 TJ has the same stalling issue. I'm thinking it's in the wiring harness after reading all the replies here. Gonna start behind the valve cover. My gut thinks the CPS (crank pos. sensor) wire might be shorting out. With loss the CPS signal, engine stalls immediately.

I UNPLUGGED EVERY ELECTRICAL CONNECTION AND SPRAYED IT WITH CLEANER..A FEW WERE DIRTY AND SOME HAD SOME OIL IN THEM...IT HELP SOME

This problem sounds like a grounding issue. check and clean. battery to engine, battery to body and body to engine confirm this. add grounding straps if missing. if that doesn't fix it check all fuses and relay contacts clean and reinstall.

Same here. 2010 jeep rubicon, engine shuts down while driving. Caution lights flash . But no check engine, nor codes. I replaced crankshaft sensor, still same issue. checked the battery and has good voltage. I took it to the dealer, they cant find anything. Ive read people replacing ECM/PCM, fuel pump, and still didnt fix it. I just started having this issue about a Year ago. Issue goes away and returns. I bought this jeep brand new in 2010. I hope its that ground cable you guys are talking about. I'll check it out when i get home. I'll keep you posted. But after researching this, its real common on many jeeps. You'd think Jeep by now would send out a recall of some sort. Its dangerous when your on the highway and all of a sudden your engine shuts down.

Reading the comments below about the issue often being wiring worries me. I just bought a 2003 Jeep Liberty. The seller had told me it had an issue previously of stalling at stop lights and signs, basically whenever it went idle. He told me he replaced the Idle Air Controller just before I got it.

It does not stop at stop lights and signs but yesterday (day after I registered and insured it) while sitting with it running in Park during lunch it stalled out after about 10 minutes while at the same time the oil light kicked on. I got out and checked the oil and it was perfectly fine. Cranked it back up and its running again with no problems. I've yet to sit parked with it running again but from my limited understanding of vehicles, wiring/electrical problems are a total b*tch no one wants to deal with that can be costly.

I have your problem and have replaced everything like yourself, have you solved it?

There is a tool call a 007 that you can hook in parallel with a wire your checking and if an interrupted occurs for a split second the light will come on and stay on. Very handy

I've got the same issue. Mines on a 2002 WJ with 4.0L. You did he say what kind of Jeep you have. Some info I've got for mine is the "SKIM" reader. (Sentry Key Immobilizer Module) since mine has a chip in the key.

It's in the harness, has to be a short. Shows no sensors that are out, it has to be in wiring. Or ground bolts and lugs need cleaned up and re-bolted on

That happens to me a lot I just tap the fuse box by the battery and pull the battery cables then it'll turn on 1st time or I'll keep trying like 3 or 4 more times.

My 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo has that same problem. Driving on the freeway it just shuts down I throw it in neutral let it coast hit the ignition and it starts right up again. I've replaced everything you mention plus all 4 O2 Sensors, Crank shaft position sensor, and this weekend hopefully replacing the fuel injectors to 4 hole BOSCH. Also going to look into a heat shield. Also going to replace the spark plugs and eventually the PCU. I wish you the best of luck
