98 Jeep Grand Cheorkee Stalling Problem SOLVED!

UPDATE! I have more permanent fix for this. Cost was only $2.99. Check out a picture of what I did here:

My 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee had the infamous stalling issue. The vehicle would random stall when I would come to a stop. If I shifted into gear it would sometimes stall. It would NOT stall while in the park position.

I replaced the distributor cap, ignition coil. Sparks plugs and wires were in good condition. Still stalled. I did some research and thought it might be an electrical problem. I looked at all of my wires for burns, rips or tears. Still nothing.

Then I came across the PCM connector issue. I wiggled my PCM wire harness and forced it to stall. I decided to remove the PCM and attempt the soldering myself.

As I was removing the PCM, I noticed the mounting bolts were VERY LOOSE. I still decided to open up the PCM to look at it, however, I believe the issue was that the whole PCM was loose. After I put everything back together it does NOT stall. WHEW!

UPDATE! One Year

About a month ago, my Jeep started to have stalling issues again. The Jeep started to randomly misfire once or twice in a row stall sometimes and then drive normal all day. Then it started to get worse. It went from random occasionally stalling to once a day, then every time I drove it. Within the past month I replaced, ignition coil, spark plugs, fuel assembly module (pump, filter and sock), air filter and finally my Catalytic Converter. That's about $500 right there. Still had stalling

Finally, I stumbled upon this old video. Sure enough I had to tighten up those bolts again. PROBLEM SOLVED AGAIN! This was definitely the issue then and still is an issue. Those bolts work themselves loose over time. It took about a year, but I got it. Don't forget the LOCK TIGHT. Jeep is running

We had to replaced some air valve. Problem solved. It died @ decceleration. Thank goodness. My husband did it in my driveway after I cleaned idle control, new fuel filter and new ignition.
Got our reliable little jeep back on the road.
We love old jeeps so much. Wish we had a Comanche.

okay so I got an update for you. it was a simple as replacing the PCM. I have not had one Hiccup from the engine since I replaced it a week and a half ago. Does not stall at stop signs, lights, or anytime I'm slowing down and the engine doesn't stutter either. I did put a piece of wood in front of the harness connections with tie straps because the harness Clips are broken off but other than that did nothing else. so that was the fix, at least for my jeep.

You guys with the Grand Cherokees have a different computer (at least the housing) than us with Cherokee Sports, and ours is in a different location. My 1996 XJ does not have any screws in the middle of the cover plate either side. It has four Torx on the front, one in each corner. It has some in the back too, but they are also along the perimeter.I checked all the mounting screws (5/8" hex), the only one a little loose goes into a nylon nut into the inner fender metal (was a screw for the PCM mount where it attaches to body). Checked the plugs and the right one was a little loose. I plan on zip tying all of them down tighter. Will see soon enough if that was the issue making it cut out while driving, seems to happen when under hood was hot.

on mine thanks to YouTube My 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee is running great so far so good I took my PCM apart 2 days ago and resoldered the connections which was hell wouldn't flow and when it did it would drop onto the plastic beside the connection which is to dang close but I also seen a video where the 2 screws with the hex heads on the PCM being to long and grounding it out so I did that as well added 3 washers each screw and tightened them up and remounted it up tight reconnected the negetive battery terminal and started right up as always when cold and didn't stall when warmed up so test drove it and it has never ran this good every time I put it on computer it would tell me a different sensor everytime replaced 4 of them put would tell me same sensor I just changed was bad and would stall as soon as it would warm up this fixed mine

i have a 97 and was having the same issue so i finally solder the pcm connections because it would only stall when the weather was hot or i drove the car for a long time . it would also stall and turn off while i was moving the pcm connections around .so if you drive and hit a bump or something it would stall ..

Google+ deleted the pictures of your $2.99 fix. Was it zip ties to tighten down the plugs?

I find it hard to believe that the mounting bolts were the culprit. Have you had any issues since making this video?

my 96 has been having this issue for a very long time. I've replaced every sensor, fuel pump/filter. transmission overhaul. Probably over 2 grand in parts and labor (not including my own wrench time) & nobody seems to know for sure what it is. Chrysler has been notified but doesn't seem to care. I think it's time to throw in the towel & say bye to the Jeep and switch brands. To bad really, I like Jeeps.

Hey guys I have an 04 Inline 6 Grand Cherokee. Works great when cold but once it warms up, it shuts off when I put it in reverse. Forward works great. Reverse works only when cold. Any ideas? Thanks!

My jeep stalls out on me while I am driving. Could this be my PCM also?
