I remember when I started 5X5, I was a little embarrassed from having to start with such little weight. But nobody hassled me. And when anybody asked me what I was doing, I just said, "Oh I just recently started lifting and I'm doing 5x5" and they'd respond very positively and encourage me to stick with it.

"Gymtimidation" my ass.

I did the 5 x 5 way back in the 1960's.  Most people do too many supplemental exercises.  Less is more in many ways when trying to gain size and strength.  There are very few new concepts in weight training.  Back in the '60's and 70's we did the same routines that you guys are using now.  One of Weider's first courses had us doing 6 x 6 with one exercise per body part.  Worked!

Don't get a personal trainer. What you need to do is research research research. Nutrition and training wise. It's a fairly long process, but educating yourself with the help of others and reliable sources is the best way, in my opinion, to get to where you want. It may seem a bit confusing in the beginning, but when you get the hold of it, it's actually pretty simple :)

Just started SL 5x5 this week, too early to review it, however I have a good feeling about it, should help to increase "real world strength" :-)

I like the simplicity and structure of this routine.

I'm a huge advocate of 5X5. Its so easy to stay with...the tricky part is eating enough to recover fast enough to squat heavy 3x per week. COOK YOUR MEALS! USE TUPPERWARE!

I'm now at my 14 month mark. #175 body weight from #145...my squat is at #315 from #135, and deadlift is #355 from #225. No gear :) and my only supplements are a daily vitamin, a preworkout (I work in 12 hour shifts, so I need a "pick me up"), a sugary drink durring training (to replenish glycogen) and a post protein shake.

I just started doing 5x5 yesterday. Tip: Start light and stick with it.

This guy doesn't even know what he's talking about. If he knew anything, he's recommend Mike Chang's Sixpack Shortcuts. Mike Chang is the man to go to for lifting advice, and he also has world class abs.

Highly recommend “Advance 5x5: Novice got me to a 275/225/405 S/BP/DL, Intermediate got me too 315/275/455 S/BP/DL. I’m currently on the advanced section and it’s going well. Thank you Elliot 🤝

I pretty much do stronglifts 5x5, but I've added dips and chin-ups on one day. I like it. I used to do bro-splits, but I can't believe now that I did.

Thanks for putting this up very encouraging. Finally decided to start it as a New Years thing. Now middle of March, It's been 2 and a half months. It's nice too see constant improvement, even though I've had to de - load many times. Hard at first since I had a very sedentary lifestyle (Video games and junk food) but, I'm getting better. Started with nothing on the bar, and looking forward to that 300lb squat! Thank you again. Here's where I'm at now for 5x5.
Age: 18
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 150lbs (Yea, I'm a skinny one)
SQ: 200lbs
BP: 155lbs
OHP: 100lbs
BBR: 135lbs
DL: 215lbs

You do:

deadlifts, oh press and squats on day 1.
bench, rows and squats on day 3.
deadlifts, oh press and squats on day 5.

Next week you do the bench press workout on day 1 and 5, and the deadlift workout on day 3. Its simple sf.

Just look up Stronglifts 5x5.  Its at Stronglifts.com. Its a great workout.  Only 5 compound exercise (3 a day) you use in alternating days 3 times a week.  You can actually do the whole program with only a squat rack. The exercises you use are squat, bench press, barbell row, overhead press and dead lift.

Medhi should be so grateful for a shoutout from Elliott. I found out about stronglifts 5x5 a year ago and loved it. It does what it says if you follow.

You could work that into a push/pull/legs program. Push day: 5x5 Bench, OHP, dips, etc, Pull: Deadlifts, Chins, Rows, etc, Legs: Squats, leg press, calves, etc.
