There's something heartbreaking to hear that the executioner thought he was meant to heal people, but was forced to harm them instead

Executioners and people in a similar caste system were treated terribly because the people believed that they absorbed the sin from the condemned. Even priests had to go through cleansing practices before anyone would touch them or come near them. What an awful time to be alive where you're forced into a job and then exiled for it

The fact that we get free documentaries on YouTube by The Infographics Show is truly a gift 👍

I have nothing but respect for this unfortunate man. Forced to hurt when he wants to heal, taking his job with pride anyways and staying sane all the while. He made the best of what he had

This is horrifying to listen to, but I'm glad he wrote down his memoirs. We could avoid many current mistakes if we really knew our past.

-'On his grave, he was described as a “physician”, and over the decades, indeed, he claimed to have treated more than 15, 000 patients, including three imperial emissaries, a Teutonic knight, and the cathedral provost at Bamberg, mostly for external wounds and injuries of various kinds.' -

I didn't know that a story of an Executioner could be so touching! They should make a movie about that guy, like:"diary of an executioner"

So that's why the Rattay executioner lives away from the local population in Kingdom Come Deliverance, They weren't allowed to basically be apart of anything

Nothing like learning about medieval executions just after waking up and before work!

Well extra fact, because executioners are the ones who can legally dissect a human body -> they are the only ones who can learn about human anatomy thus making them good doctors. Leonardo Da Vinci act of cutting up bodies is still considered a crime in his time. which is much later than this guy. That's where his human wheel picture comes from (Vitruvian man).

I weirdly respect this dude. I mean, his work was awful but a man's gotta eat.

Imagine dying in your intoxication. The execution wouldn't be painful that much since alcohol suppresses most of the sensory neurons sending pain signals to the brain

You know the sad part about this is, it's not only possible but pretty likely that someone was executed for stealing food, and that only before his execution were the local leaders charitable enough to give him food.
