Why do you grieve, and how can you overcome the intense emotions grief can often produce?

Grief is one of the most profound human experiences you’ll go through. It’s also inevitable. You can’t escape grief, no matter how hard you try. That’s what makes it so challenging. But you can learn how to cope with the natural ups and downs of the grieving process.

Dr. Mary Francis O’Connor is here today to help us understand what’s happening on a neurological level when you’re grieving. Dr. O’Connor is an associate professor of psychology at the University of Arizona and directs the Grief, Loss and Social Stress Lab studying the effects of grief on the body and brain. She’s also the author of the book, The Grieving Brain: The Surprising Science of How We Learn from Love and Loss.

Grief is always tied to pain, but part of the emotional response is your brain activating different areas as it tries to process your loss. Whether you’re experiencing profound grief yourself or know someone going through it, this episode will change how you think about love and loss while giving you tools to navigate this deeply emotional journey.

I lost my 4 year old son in a house fire in 1972. I couldn't even say his name, I had friends that I met after his death who never knew I had a son who died in a tragic way. We never talked about him, my adult kids had kids and my grandchildren and great-grandchildren didn't even know about him. Finally, after 50 years I faced my grief head-on and now I can actually tell people about my son, say his name, and I've been able to process my grief, after all these years.

Thank you Mary Frances and Jim for this discussion! I am a widower. I lost my wife to gastric cancer in 2022. I’m still learning about the changes to my mind and body during this journey. I will be listening to your book Mary Frances. Thank you for sharing with us! Also, I will recommend another book, “It’s OK That You’re Not OK” by Megan Devine. It’s a book for those who are grieving or know someone who is.

He was 33yr old our one and only lost him last yr.2024. We both were so attached to him, after he left- v can't stop grieving his loss. He was our strength joy Happiness
Our brain's processor seem so overloaded.
Like Mary said our grieving has been like a roller coaster ride - lost, empty painful broken, most of the times we dono how to put ourselves together.
Nothing seems to comfort us. After 16mnths - we have come to realised, our lives r never going to be same without Andrew. Nor will v ever b able to stop grieving him.

I am suffering from Insulin Resistance, so I can't focus, I can't fix it because my liver is literally obliterated because of my foolish parents.
I tried Dr. Berg's Keto and Intermittent Fasting plan, experienced cognitive benefits for around 2 months, but my Bad liver overrided any of my efforts 😭😢

The subtitles are properly punctuated, but they aren't always properly rendered (for example, the spelling of your name). Great video though.
