Why I'm Still a Christian

I’m not sure if you have paid attention to the news about Christianity for the past…oh…I don’t know…1,800 years…but you probably wonder why anyone would be a part of such a religion. There are so many reasons why someone shouldn’t be a Christian. Yet, I still very much identify as a Christian even though I left the Christianity I had grown up in. So why I am still a Christian?

"But Jesus never listened to Skillet..." - I'm crying 😂 This is both really empowering and hilarious

I'm neither a Christian or a millennial, but I do appreciate your channel and this video. While I question whether there is a liberating form of Christianity, I will acknowledge there is a form of Christianity that offers hope to its believers. The only time I feel compelled to argue against any form of religion is when it threatens the education and well-being of my child, or others not yet able to defend themselves. Oh, and also I discuss its legitimacy with those I am close to and care about, especially those who look to faith rather than medicine.

Skillet slander AND a Foo Fighters reference?? I’ll join Patreon just because of that 😂 I’ve been binge-watching your videos recently and they’ve been a breath of fresh air. Keep up the good work, and the good music taste!

Not only this video is great and it helps me to not feel like so much of a heathen for still considering myself a christian (even though I have many problems with church, especially with the rising tide of the alt-right inside of it here in Brazil), it also made me laugh for the stabs at Skillet (which I used to love when I was becoming a teenager and had to listen to christian music even though I loved rock and metal).

Thanks for always making me feel more at peace with my beliefs, Mason!

Had to pause this to text the line “if Nickelback saved sex for marriage” to the middle school friends who moshed with me during the Skillet performance at our local Christian music festival 20 years ago… glad I came back for the rest!

Ugh! I’m from New Zealand and on Tuesday was our national Census day and one of the questions was on religion. And I grew up in church and I consider myself Christian. But the Christianity I grew up with and the place I’m at now are different. I put down objecting to answering, primarily because I could not pin down what I am down. (The question could have been asked differently I suppose, I don’t know 😂).

Anyway, another great and insightful video as usual ❤️

We need a podcast episode where you invite Jon Cooper under the guise of some deep theological discussion, only you just spend the whole time shitting on his band.

Recently came to a similar conclusion of being a Christian again- But in the true OG fashion of a Christ follower, vs worshipper. Following Jesus lessons of love, and directing our worship to the father. Also some beautiful channeled material giving excellent insight into deconstruction of the Bible/Christianity from the early 1900's is The Padgett Messages. Recognizing what we have as the teachings/Bible today is but a fairly distorted image of the Truths of God's love, Jesus life & teachings 🔥❤️

“But not like the shitty breakdown you’d hear in a Skillet song” 🤣💀

I especially liked the part about God becoming flesh in us. From my readings, especially of John, I get the sense that this is something Jesus was conscious of and intentional about.

Can your third thing be characterized as a sort of theosis?

Well that was moving, which is not what you want when sharing an office. I also say don't know Christian rock until you have heard Larry Norman.

This is sort of a constant struggle, but I think Alan Hirsch's work was what really freed me, in how he identified that if you separated the Pastors who rebooted the KKK in the 20's from their active terrorism, they were these really awesome pastors...but they weren't separable, they're both awesome and terrible, and we have to grapple with that, rather than either "forgiving" them or No True Scotsmaning them.

My wife's Uncle next door is a stand up dude, and he's always there to help with any house issues we have, but he's racist and wants to join the school board to keep queerness out of our schools.

Ultimately, the question is far less whether we can find the "right" version of Christianity, than whether we can find a community that we can explore Christ with together, or if we're unfortunate enough to have to do it alone.

Jesus of Nazareth reached out to the marginalized, dispossessed, shunned, despised, outside society’s privilege. Christianity is about unconditional love for ALL God’s children. We are genuinely loved and accepted by The Divine. No one is outside. That and Evangelicals have more in common with the Pharisees than Jesus of Nazareth.
