Technically Padme's legal last name is Naberrie and Amidala was the last name she chose when she became queen of Naboo and she used Amidala as her public last name from then until her death. Though when she married Anakin her legal last name became Naberrie-Skywalker.

This wouldn't be to far from her original canon story arc. In the novelization, she was pretty much like this. She was selfless, she would put others before herself. When the CIS was starting to form, she was against a military mobilization of the Republic against them and wanted to start negotiation to find some common ground. She doesn't seek to become more powerful like Palpatine or too manipulate others, she wanted to represent everyone as equals for the greater good.
