What happens when you crack your neck IN 60 SECONDS!!

Cracking your neck can be a very satisfying thing to do. Neck cracks can be harmless or very dangerous. There's a long-held myth that cracking your neck can cause strokes or headaches. But what's actually making those noises, and is it actually bad for you?

There's a space in your joints that is filled with synovial fluid, a liquid that reduces the friction in your joints when you move. It contains gases (oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide).

When you pop a joint (in this case your neck), you stretch out that space between the bones. That expanding space creates negative pressure, that sucks in the synovial fluid. It forms bubbles, which then collapse, and voila! that popping sound emerges. Chiropractors are trained to use cavitation to free up joints and ease pain or discomfort. The joint fluid increases after neck cracking. It kind of lubricates the joint, so it feels more mobile, that's why it feels so good.

Most medical sources agree that cracking your neck every now and then is harmless, but if you do it all the time can actually be dangerous and lead to a stoke.

Honestly the only downside to cracking my neck is I have to wait 30 minutes to an hour to do it again

Foam rolling my back right after waking up is the best part of the day. Always sounds like the Fourth of July going on in there.

I’m recovering from having chronic cervical instability. Now when I crack my neck the bones are just going back into the correct spot. It’s an amazing feeling because sometimes I will feel extreme pressure on my nerves but then I’ll crack my neck and that pressure will instantly release.

"Doing it once in a while is harmless, but when you do it more often it is certainly bad for you." - Someone make my parents understand this thing.

I do it 1-2 times a day if my neck hurts 1-2 times a day, sometimes it takes a while to crack so I don’t try to crack for a month, or maybe even longer to get it to crack.

If I sleep in an odd position, my neck muscles become all tense, affecting my neck and spine. I’ve gotten to the point that I’ll use heat to relax the muscles.. once that happens, my neck and back cracks naturally.

I don’t force, but as I stretch, everything begins to align properly.

What about those of us who are hypermobile and all our joints crack all the time?

Cracking of the joints is directly comparable with drug addiction. You use, you like how it feels, you continue to use and as a result you build tolerance. As time goes on you must use more and more to get the same response. I have Tourette’s so cracking my neck is a super habitual, unconscious thing for me and has been for about 5 years. I’m only 20 years old but my neck is always extremely strained and tight, and recently I have been getting massive pain near my carotid artery when I swallow or turn my head. Please don’t ever crack your neck it will only hurt you in the end.

Everytime I move my head to the left or tilt my neck to the right or left it cracks, I try to do it slowly to not harden the cracking, but what worries me is that it resets every 5-10 seconds, sometimes when I’m distracted or not thinking about it, it doesn’t occur, it’s been happening every day for a week or 2 and now I’m starting to notice that my neck feels weaker at times, and I don’t know how to stop it because it’s the slightest movements, any tips?

I'm pretty sure it's the fluid since I've seen this explained over and over again but I refuse to believe it, really. Its bones cracking to me. 😁
