To some degree it can become an addiction for some people. For others it can be simply about expressing themselves, others it's about liking their body in a way they haven't before and others still use tattoos particularly to cover past scars. You also get people who get a lot for a mix of reasons.
As for taking them out you can get plastic or glass retainers for that. Those are used basically to keep the hole open while the metal can't be in. Most piercings close very quickly, the retainer for my nostril piercing came out while I was in hospital and the hole closed in less than 24 hours. It now looks like a little dimple that only I notice. The only piercing that doesn't tend to close quickly is ear lobe piercings especially if you've had them since you were young. I had my ear kobe piercings out for over a month and the jewellery went back in smoothly.
