TIG Welding Aluminum with a Gas Lens

I don't always use a gas lens on aluminum... but for this video, I was using an air cooled 17 style torch so the extra mass you get with a large diameter gas lens collet body helps keep the torch cooler...at least a little bit.
I set my amperage to 200 and used a foot pedal. I needed 200 amps at first but quickly let off to 175-185 amps once the part heated up.
I used a rounded 2% lanthanated tungsten electrode and I often do that when I am in the upper limit amperage for a 3/32" tungsten.

for the outside corner joint, I rounded the tip slightly on a tapered electrode.
for the tee joint, I just let the tip round by itself so that I could direct heat into the root.
hope this helps.

Just wanted to say thanks Jody. You've basically taught me how to TIG weld - lots left to learn but I'll keep watching. Warmest wishes from the UK 🇬🇧

I purchased on of your Gas Lense kits from my Everlast Power-TIG 185 and it has not been a disappointment at all. Even just starting out, I can see how much better this kit works over the standard cups and collet bodies. Great information. So thankful you do what you do. You’ve made learning fun and easy. I’m sure everything I’ve learned from all of your videos will be beneficial in my career. Thanks for everything, Jody!

I really liked the bit where you could see the markings on the filler rod. It lets you see how much filler you are pushing in. Great channel.

I have never seen anyone do this online, but one thing I do when teaching aluminum welding, is grab a pair of side cutters and lightly make marks about every 1/2" to 3/4" spaced out lengths on the filler rod, to give people a visual representation of how much you have to feed the rod into the puddle to build it up.

Hi from Scotland Jody!
I really enjoy your work and have got my apprentice onto your videos for extra tips and tricks! An aluminium TIG welding video at high amps 400-600+ would be very interesting if you happened to have a machine lying around that'll do it!
All the best.

I want a welding position-er even though I don't need one. No air cooled torch for me Jody, I'll stick with my liquid cooled old HW20. Thanks for the video.

Excellent. I have been discussing this very thing with my students.

Jody, I really like your videos, they have helped me a lot! Your knowledge is incredible, thank you! 🤗 I just wondered, why you never promote or tell people about other channels doing the same, like channels that have way less subscribers?! People are struggling making ends meat, especially in this crazy era we live in, and everyone needs our support! I for example I am a TIG welder, and like to support brothers in our profession! Discovered a channel called X3M TIG, guy has amazing skills, and just started his channel recently as it seems, doesn’t have a lot of subscribers, we should support him and people like that, as hardworking people really deserve it !! 👨🏻‍🏭💪🏻👍
