Gollum's eyes when he hears his name is the reason I love this story so much. So subtle yet powerful.

Gollum hadn’t heard his real name in over 500 years. Being called ‘Smeagle’ again after so long must have brought back the memories from his old life…before he was destroyed by the Ring.

0:26 “So bright, so beautiful, our precious!”

I love how Gollum is mirroring Frodo by pretending to caress the ring 💍

They cursed us. Murderer they called us. They cursed us, and drove us away. And we wept, Precious, we wept to be so alone. And we only wish to catch fish so juicy sweet. And we forgot the taste of bread... the sound of trees... the softness of the wind. We even forgot our own name. My Precious.

His story is honestly so sad. Even after regaining the memories of his past life and relearning his name he still betrayed Frodo. It still breaks my heart when he’s strangling Frodo up on the mountain and when Frodo responds “Smeagól gave his word!” He responds back with “Smeagól lied” >:)

I love he switches to using singular pronouns for himself in this scene after he’s reminded his real name. That switch from his typical Gollum behavior to “What did you call me?” always gives me chills.

Performance was amazing. The look on his face when he realizes his name was Sméagol and he was once human.

Awesome fantasy scen

Notice how his pupils are still small he's still in the Gollum persona. Most don't notice this but each of his personas can be identified by the size of his pupils. Big = Smeagol, Small = Gollum.

This is a perfect example how small and personal parts of this story fill this epic tale. Beautifully executed.

CGI was never put to a better use than in this trilogy -- exactly how it needs to be and serving the story

I believe this is the greatest Gollum moment. The animation when he hears his real name is just gorgeous.

Is this literally the only time where Smeagol talks in first person? lol

You know, from this scene and Gollum’s conversation with himself between his two personalities Sméagol and Gollum, especially the part where Gollum calls Sméagol a murderer and Sméagol is remorseful, and the ending song “Gollum”, I think I can see where they were originally going to have the flashback that opens The Return of the King depicting Sméagol’s murder of Deagol and transformation into Gollum in this film instead. I can definitely see at this point when Gollum hears his old name, the flashback would have taken place.

Notice he said what did you call me instead of us

I like how in the movie Gollum could have changed had circumstances been different.

Serkis and Gollum appeared on the 2003 MTV Movie Awards, when Gollum won "Best Virtual Performance" and went on to deliver an obscenity-laden acceptance speech in character, so well received that it won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form.Wizard magazine rated Jackson's Gollum as the 62nd-greatest villain of all time, from among 100 villains from film, television, comics and video games. In addition, Serkis as Gollum was placed thirteenth on Empire magazine's "100 Greatest Movie Characters of all Time".

Smeagol is creepy. But, I will say that the friendship/bond between him and Frodo is unbreakable.

'What did you call me?'The way he sounds almost 'human' again

1:42 Peter Jackson said in the Director's commentary that his original plan was to push the camera right into Smeagol's eye here and then switch to the flashback scene of Smeagol and Deagol we see at the beginning or "Return of the King." And at the end of that scene, we would come back out of it at the sound of the Nazgul's scream. Peter decided it would be better to keep Smeagol's origin story a mystery for a little longer. And also, the flashback scene would stop THIS movie dead for the 4-5 minutes it takes to play out.
