Smeagol transforms into Gollum (The Lord of the Rings- The Return of the King)

SMEAGOL: My precious.

Smeagol vanishes and the scene changes to one amongst rocks he is grimacing, dirty and ragged.

SMEAGOL: They cursed us

(GOLLUM: Murderer)

SMEAGOL: Murderer ... they called us. They cursed us and drove us away. (hugs himself biting his thumb. He opens his filthy hand to show the ring.)

SMEAGOL: Gollum... Gollum... Gollum... (holds his throat crying) and we wept precious. We wept to be so alone.

He grabs a fish out of the water

SMEAGOL: and cool, so nice for feet and we only wish to catch a fish (he bites the fish in his filthy teeth) so juicy sweet.

Fades out and back in showing Smeagol much deteriorated looking mad. Shows him crawling into a dark cave.

SMEAGOL: And we forgot the taste of bread, the sound of trees and the softness of the wind. We even forgot our own name.

Smeagol closes his eyes and when he opens them again he has changed into Gollum.

GOLLUM: My precious!

I found this utterly terrifying as an 8 year old child... 24 now and its still creepy.

Gotta love how he had a ring that granted him more power than any mortal could hope for and he chose to spend his days robbing goblins and eating fish in a cave for centuries.

The scariest thing about Gollum, for me, is that it makes Sauron and the evil of the Ring feel disturbingly real. Without him, we’d know it corrupts powerful men and wizards and turns them into wraiths or dark lords, which certainly feels scary but still very distant from our perspective.
But what the Ring did to Sméagol - long lifespan aside - could happen to anyone abusing drugs or having a serious mental illness. Gollum reminds us that the Ring is a fictional object, but the evil it represents is not.

I like how he is obsessed with catching fish, it's like reliving the trauma of the moment the ring corrupted him but he is so mindbroken by it that he just regresses back to the primal version of himself.

FUN FACT: Smeagol was haunted by the murder of his cousin Deagol, so he made up the story that the ring was his birthday present that was given to him by his grandmother.

In retrospect, what a great way to start the film. Hobbits are symbols of gentleness, carefree life, childlike innocence and goodheartedness, and the first scene we're treated to is the Ring making one coldly murder his friend and degrade into an insane animal.

Hammers home "This thing is pure evil" better than anything else we see.

This scene is like a psychological thriller/horror film and I love it.

The opening 8 minutes of return of the king were some of the darkest and creepiest moments of the whole trilogy.

This can be seen as a metaphor for drug addiction. I think a friend of mine actually showed this scene in a group for recovering narcotics.

The way this actor performed is unmatched. An innocent creature of peace and joy goes through complete insanity to demonic. the part where he is being called murderer gives me chills, imagine realizing u r in hell and just killed ur best friend....the painful story of good going to bad.

As a child I always was so interested in gollum purely because I felt bad for him. A small unhealthy little thing obsessed with a ring. And watching this. I still feel bad for him
