Wow, even after hundreds of years of exposure to the ring, he still was able to tell or "gollum" or "precious" to go away, temporarily at least.

God, the way the camera cuts between the two personalities is just brilliant.

Damn those Hobbits are heavy sleepers.

"We survived because of me!" We all have a Gollum. Even if it doesn't talk aloud, we can hear it in our minds when things begin to get difficult.

This is heartbreaking. Especially when Gollum says "Murderer..."

Andy Serkis is criminally underrated; he's absolutely fantastic in all of his work.

As a kid I found this hilarious now as an adult I find this tragic and relatable.

Notice how pupils of "Gollum" are tiny and the pupils of "Sméagol" are big?

I like the little attention to detail Tolkien added in his speech patterns. He still refers to himself as "we" WE told him to go away. Just as a hint that he's not actually gone, and the ring is still decieveing him.

"You dont have any friends... Nobody likes you!" Sums up my life pretty well XD

Sméagol is actually kind, compassionate, honest, And caring. He would never lie. He would never hurt anyone weaker than him. He is a good person. Gollum is all of these bad traits.

They did a pretty good job in this scene. You can see Smeagol trying to escape from the wretched side that the Ring created, Gollum.

The most powerful moment of this scene to me is once Smeagol says his final "LEAVE NOW AND NEVER COME BACK!", and he realizes he has silenced Gollum inside of him (for now). That part where he just looks around for a couple seconds is so breathtaking. He just has for us only the briefest moment of silent looking around, but there is so many layers in it: a mixture of physical disorient, confused shock, wonderment, fear of retaliation, excitement at his own moxie, determining if this is really IT.... after 500 years, has he finally actually silenced the darkness and miserable self hatred inside him?....He is waiting for the answer, pleading behind the eyes, waiting for it to pass and fail...and just yet....it happens. He gets silence, blessed silence. He's getting a thin ray of hope, that bare realization for all addicts and people who struggle with mental illness that maybe, just MAYBE, if he has a bit of courage to fight, and a friend to support and coach him, MAYBE he will power through and he can be finally free and happy. For this emotionally complicated a performance to be all acted out, let alone motion capped in CGI, an animation style ironically not known for always getting the best of emotional organic human details right, is astounding.

It is so fucking sad.

"Murderer...!"
This is such a great moment. Those who don't know about his backstory are intrigued. One wonders what murder this refers to. And, the third movie shows it, which makes for such an excellent playback moment. The dark tone of that accusation cuts so much deeper as one looks into those eyes, knowing what murder Gollum is referring to. Perfect.

2:28 It goes without saying that "Sméagol is free" is the most tragic line in the entire trilogy by far. Considering what Sméagol has become at this point in the story, he will never truly be free...

Only now in adulthood do I realize just how impressive this scene is, and how much of a leap forward it was for CGI special effects.

Two physically identical "characters", and yet they used cinematic language and expressions to convince the viewer that each was a distinct individual, and that this entirely digital character we were watching was a person with feelings and inner thoughts.

Hats off to both Serkis and the animators for succeeding at something so ambitious for its time (and heck, even today it's very well-done).

The “I hate you.” Always breaks my heart. Just to see him die at the end.

This came out in 2002, it’s just about 20 years old now. The CGI, acting, and editing has aged very well. Props to the studio who worked on this trilogy!
