Visualization of Shielding Gas in GMAW with PIV + CAVILUX Illumination Laser

Visualizing welding gas flows can be realized with different imaging methods. Schlieren imaging is widely used option that requires a large setup of optics. Another option is PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) technique using a light sheet which can be used in cases where access is limited.

Researchers at the Technische Universität Dresden have studied the behavior and flow of shielding gas in a GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) process using PIV. Tracer particles in the shielding gas flow were illuminated twice with a laser within defined, short time intervals enabled by the pulse ability of our CAVILUX HF laser system.
