PIV Measurements of Shielding Gas Flow in Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) with CAVILUX HF
Показать описание
While getting clear footage of various welding processes through imaging with CAVILUX laser illumination provides excellent learning opportunity as well as a tool for research and development of welding processes, it also provides the opportunities to go a step further and apply a variety of measurement techniques and visualizations such as Particle Image Velocimetry or PIV.
Researchers at Technical University of Dresden in Germany have used PIV for flow investigations in arc welding processes with relatively high spatial and temporal resolution. The use of pulsed diode lasers for PIV measurements offers new possibilities for time-dependent flow analyses of shielding gas flow in arc welding. It enables flow analyses up to a frame rate of 10.000 fps on gas metal arc welding (GMAW), as well as on gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW).
Since the shielding gas in welding processes is one of the most studied subjects due to its effect on the efficiency and effectiveness of the process, having clear visualized data of it offers new scientific research approaches for optimization of the gas shield quality in GMAW. This is beneficial in future developments of systems and processes that offer more efficient systems and better welds.
