This is the start of a series highlighting 4 different desktop environments for desktop Linux. This first episode is about the Xfce desktop environment. It's lightweight, full featured, and configurable. I used both Linux Mint Xfce edition and Xerolinux Xfce edition. They are both great options just different approaches to using this desktop environment.

I'm an Xfce advocate too, have been using Linux for 2 years and when I try a different desktop environment I end up coming back to Xfce again and again, it just works

It's because Xfce just works. Xfce is a conservative project. It has modularity but not too much. It's customizable but not to the point of being confusing. It has a low memory footprint. It's easy to do a basic customization and get back to work. This makes it perfect for me. I love KDE but the codebase (and memory usage) is massive. For me, Debian with Xfce is a winning combination for my production machines.

I always ended up returning to it and I used most DEs and WMs under the sun.
Xfce is home :)

Because it just works, and makes sense

I've been using Xfce as my desktop environment for over 4 years now, and I'm still a big fan. It's simple and straightforward, without any unnecessary bells and whistles. This makes it easy to get to work without having to spend a lot of time configuring and organizing your desktop.

XFCE is good for everyone. It's highly customizable and works on most hardware.

I love XFCE, my most favorite DE -- I always pick XFCE on my Arch system. It works great on old machines too.

I have tried a lot of distros and have used all the popular desktop environments (Gnome, KDE, XFCE). Finally settled on XFCE Linux Mint. Best thing ever!!!

I'm not a computer nerd. For me a computer is just a tool to get work done. And the desktop environment is nothing more than the means to do just that in a simple straightforward way. That's what Xfce is for me.

I've been using Xfce for a while on Linux Lite and I'm really impressed with how tweakable it is, specially for such a lightweight distro. I just wish its settings were better organized, there are appearance options scattered all over the place.

This thing truly is lightweight and full featured! The four desktop environments that you made videos for are all so good. I should probably try others to experience a wide range of DEs, but really how many am I going to use on a regular basis. This is more than enough choice for me. I really want to look into window managers anyway, so I can't see myself branching out to more than these four (at least for now).

what was that "nes" command that you ran at 4:25?

It's very lightweight and customizable. only downside is that it doesnt have wayland support yet. I use it with Arch Linux and looks great when you add themes to it.

I moved all my work to VMs and since 2018 I have used the Xfce VMs of Xubuntu 18.04 LTS; Xubuntu 20.04 LTS and since this month Xubuntu 22.04 LTS for my communication apps; like evolution; caprine (facebook messenger); whatsie (whatsapp); transmission, skype and kde-connect.
It is the only Virtualbox VM, that is always loaded. I assigned it 2.5GB of RAM. I runs it on top of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with all data and VMs stored in OpenZFS 2.1. Xubuntu boots in ~8.5 seconds. The HW is a Ryzen 3 2200G; 16 GB DDR4 (3000MHz); 512GB SP nvme-SSD (3400/2300 MB/s).

The SWAP file is 293MB of 1090MB. I don't care about the swap file, because it does not influence the responsiveness. SWAP content will be stored either in the ZFS memory cache (L1ARC; 3GB; lz4 compressed) or on the SP nvme-SSD.

It's one of the oldest dekstop environment written by developers, I mean programmers, who put a premium on performance and long term usebility.
Today, all sorts of software comes and go within a few years..need to upgrade and update and more update....
EDIT: Oh yeah the dark theme fad will be gone in about 2 years..LOL

Pure Xfce is the best, fastest, and has no bloat. I have tried xfce MX linux version and Xfce Mint version and they look and feel different from just normal unedited Xfce.

XFCE isn't trying to impress you with stupid features that look nice but do nothing and slow you down; It's just doing its job, aiming to let you done your job quickly and efficiently. I'm using XFCE on 12 core processor and 128 GB memory. Rest assured it has nothing to do with resource usage.

Switched to Xfce back when Gnome 2 was phased out. Never looked back. Well, once looked back when Mate came about, which is really great, but at that point I was used to Xfce and I didn't see any advantage in using mate.

Been trying to find the answer to this question, but don't seem to find a solution for it: I am currently using Linux Mint XFCE Edition, here's the thing, I want to use screen lock while downloading a file through Firefox, but when ever I do so the download stops, is there a setting in XFCE which you can set so the download keep working in the background??

This never happens in Cinnamon or MATE, there you can start a download in Firefox and lock the screen and the process does not stop.

XFCE is the no bullshit DE. The first thing I did after going through an Arch install (when you have to use the Wiki), is to install XFCE. Simple, to the point and stuff just works. Not as fancy as Gnome or KDE but it gets the job done. Hell, I dont think its a coincidence that i3wm, a popular tiling window manager, uses some xfce package in its core config, e.g: xfce4-powermanager, xfxe4-screensaver, xfce screen login screen....etc...
