Aspergers And Emotions | This Is Why Autistic People Have Issues WIth Emotion

Here is why aspergers and emotions have a difficult balance in every day life.

People on the autism spectrum have a difficulty with all levels of communication.

This can be in the form of social communication and or sensory processing disorder, but also it can be emotional communication.

The ability to know ones emotions and feelings is a skill, but to then communicate those emotional feelings to other people is an acquired skill that autistic people have difficulty in.

It is all down to how the autistic brain understands the way it communicates with the outside world.

Everything about autism comes down to communication. Without efficient emotional communication an Autistc person will have stressful outbursts and in lots of cases meltdowns.

The trouble is finding someone who cares enough to find out how you’re feeling.

Definitely agree - and it's so tiring when people misunderstand you because of something you're not even aware of, like facial expressions. I just don't get how I can write a well-embellished, descriptive story, coming up with 10 synonyms for a word - then when someone asks how I feel - I can't put my finger on even one word. It's too many feelings, all at once, nearly all the time. "I feel...not good." Wow, so descriptive. 😂

I loved the pixar movie "inside out". It helped me understand my own feelings and I also use it as a tool with my kids to help them describe how they're feeling.

Dan, this problem has been the bane of my existence. It’s comforting to hear you explain these things so more people might understand. I wish TAW was around when I was young, but it’s never too late 🤗

I have Asperger's but on the contrary am very self-aware and am really in-tune with my emotions. This comes partly due to the fact that I've been through the mental health system in order to get a formal diagnostic assessment and also the job centre and other employment training and benefits systems so I've had to become very adept at explaining every little aspect of my emotions in order to convey to people how my conditions affect me, ultimately to try and find more suitable employment and have a more sustainable income.

I have problems with having a blank facial expression even though I could be so happy about something.
Hate being watched during things like opening a present for example . I feel like people are expecting me to show all this emotion on my face, so I then try and force a smile as that's what I think is expected of me.

I had actually found a cup full of all the different emotions as emojis at Walmart years ago that helped me with my son. Helped him learn about the different types of feelings and how the feeling can go along with what it might “look” like. He was 4 at the time, he’s 9 now and we’re all still learning. But it was SO helpful! Good luck everyone and this is so right on! Thank you for your content and keep doing the amazing work that helps so many. 😁

I am literally in post meltdown recovery because of a meltdown triggered (about an hour ago) by emotional overload so this video couldn't have turned up at a better time, for showing my fiance. He's still new to dealing with autism, so he is always learning. Thanks for this.

I like the idea of using emoji or scales to indicate how you're feeling!

When my son was very young, he developed an interest in Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends. That dates dates how long ago this was. I watching the videos and reading the books helped him understand facial expressions that matched basic emotions. The faces were fixed expressions for whatever was happening and learned from the context, so he has a great ability to show empathy in his own unconventional way. So the emoji idea makes so much sense. He does have a hard time expressing his own feelings. He uses his own person metaphors in question form to express basic emotions, but not the in between areas. We will have to encourage him to use emojis. I use them myself when I am at a loss for words for expressing feelings. Kind of makes me wonder about the mind of the person who created emojis in the first place.

Great video as usual, thank you!
YES to emojis/typing and +5 to -5 scale for me... A million times easier than trying to talk to others (able to edit and arrange my thoughts AND "sugar-coat" stuff for NTs 😂)

I often am emotionally detached from other people and from situations. I suspect my detachment serves a protective function, because I was traumatized when I was younger. Also, when I become especially emotional, I lose control and go nuts.

Thank you. A short, sweet concise talk on the subject. I am 78, and just now finding we are an autistic family, while actually initially focusing on one member of our family. Videos like this help so much. There is so much to learn.

This is one thing I don’t have much of a problem with. I think of everything as grey but I think I had to teach myself that. I remember I was a black and white thinker as a kid.
