He's not retiring from chess, he's retiring from wearing suits and getting up that early

He is just 31 or 32 years old and he has achieved everything his field. Respect. 🙏

he's been the top dog for like, 10 years? he doesn't have to prove himself and had made lots of money, and after all we must remember that Chess is only a game, life has way more to offer and he's young (and wealthy) to do what he wants to do and enjoy as much as possible

it's totally understandable that he lost motivation and none of us can judge him

5 world chess championships didn't mean anything to magnus.. this itself sets a legacy.

He went to the top of the mountain. But nobody was there then he looked down. And nobody else was climbing. He felt not even the joy or the sadness.

He has nothing to prove. He's still the highest rated player ever. He can beat GMs when he's drunk on stream. He doesn't have to be "world champion" because everyone knows he's still on top.

Magnus is like Gary Kasparov 20 years ago, when Gary was too strong that he had to stop playing competitive chess for other players could be motivated to play. What a legend!

We already know how good he is. He doesn't need to prove himself any longer.

Its completely understandable. At some point when someone like him accomplishes so much since he was a kid, has earned lots of money, done lots in the world of chess, and is considered one of the best to ever do it then its nothing left to gain but to enjoy other things in life.

Reminds me how Michael Phelps came back in the 2012 Olympics just to do it even though he already secured his spot as the best of all time in 2008. He even said he hated it and was depressed. He retired after 2012 for 2 years but came back strong in 2016 with newly found motivation. We might be seeing a Phoenix rising fron the ashes moment with Magnus too.

I find myself recalling an interview of an older Bobby Fischer, and he was saying he hated chess. The interviewer reacted with disbelief, but he was probably not pulling anybody's leg. The amount of prep you have to do for these games is incredible. I've always wondered if he'd have liked it more or less in the age of Stockfish.

I agree to with Carlsen's reasons for dropping out, it makes sense with him basically being like I've done it, I've been champion for a decade and I kind of want to live my life and just have fun, still play chess but no competitive world championship. One thing though that bothers me is people who are saying this current Ding Vs. Ian is not a real world championship because Magnus isn't there. The contenders can't help that magnus stepped down and they've put a lot of hard work to reaching where they are at, and to say that whichever one wins is not really world champion is disrespectful imo, they've trained like crazy and honestly might beat magnus right now in classical because they have prepped and magnus hasn't. Just my opinion I don't like the hate towards this current championship
