Magnus: *Can't be beaten*
Magnus: Fine, I'll do it myself.

Reproter: What's the motivation behind this shocking decision?
Magnus: Well, I mean...since GothamChess retired from competitive chess I didn't see the point to continue the struggle.

This makes Ding's story just that much better. He wasn't going to make the candidates until Karjakin was disqualified from the tournament. Then, in order to qualify, he had to play 26 FIDE rated games while maintaining his high rating, all within two months. Finally, Ding makes the candidates tournament. He doesn't win a single game in the first eight rounds. In the second half of the candidates tournament, Ding races through his opponents to make second place, to eventually find out that Magnus isn't going to defend his title.

From not being in the running for the Candidates tournament to playing for the world championship title. Good luck to you, Ding Liren.

Imagine if all the candidates didn't want to play for the title because it wouldn't feel as fulfilling without beating Magnus.

Dang, now it's like practically _for_ _sure_ that I'll never face Magnus in a world championship match. Damnit.

i think part of the motivation problem is: He likes chess, he wants to compete, he wants to get to 2900. But maybe he doesn't want to spend a huge chunk of his time preparing for a 1v1 match for a title he's held for a long time. That time he could spend playing in other tournaments. Maybe he thinks its more fun to be "active" not preparing months for 1 match.

Pretty bold of Carsen to follow in the steps of the great Levy "Gotham" Rozman himself
Great to see, even after your retirement, you're still influencing the greats of chess. Keep up the good work my dude

To me the "motivation" he lacks is the absence of a goal: he has to study, feel the pressure, prepare and play just to keep the title. He is not in the second position of a race, feeling the adrenaline and trying everything to reach the first car to pass it. He's the first car in the front, feeling the pressure and hoping to keep his position until the end. But for this title there is not even an end, it's just studying and playing until someone finally beats you. He loves studying and playing and he does it with a clear goal in mind: trying his best to reach 2900. But studying and playing just to keep a title is no fun and to him it's probably not worth it

Magnus is One Punch Man of Chess world, he is so much stronger than everybody else, life is boring for him.

I remember Tony Hawk being asked about if he could do another 900 and he said he thought he could but would need a lot of motivation. And that motivation would have to be more than just money. He explained that to pull it off would mean falling hard a bunch of times and to go through that he would have to really want to land another 900. I think same thing here with Magnus. He doesn't want to have to put in 4 months of intense prep just to win another title.

I always remember this Hikaru quote describing Magnus.

Non-verbatim: "Me, Levon, Caruana or any other super GMs could be a world champion in any other era, but there's this Norwegian dude that exists."

He recognizes that any super GMs right now can beat any other super GMs but Magnus is just so clearly ahead of any other competitor that it sucks for any other player. On the other hand, Magnus also feels that isolation of being the best and having very little competition when he prepares his heart out. He enjoys the thrill and he enjoys reaching his goals. Defending a title felt like a chore and now he removed that shackle. This js very good for other super GMs because we can now determine a world champion if there was no Magnus outlier and maybe this World Championship cycle is gonna be wild with it changing hands every few years.

However, Magnus retiring in his peak is very weird. You'll have a new world champion who will always be questioned if he truly is the best in the world. It will be normal for the world champion to be dumpstered by a random Norwegian dude and we can't do anything about it.

However, if someone finally shows dominance in the World Championship(maybe Alireza in the future or some other young super GM), maybe Magnus will finally step up and challenge this new dominant force. If this happens, it will be very interesting to see if the best of our current generation can hold up against the torch bearer of the next. Finally, when Magnus is defeated by the next dominant force, then only then will we recognize a new era of Chess.

What caused lack of motivation is meaning. There’s no meaning left for Magnus in a rematch vs Nepo.

Honestly, if I was nepo I would be pissed. Imagine always doubting if whether or not you are truly the “greatest” player in the world. Bet he wants some friendly revenge as well.

I remember seeing someone write something about the fact that Magnus not defending his title will provide him with more opportunities to get to 2900. Such as being able to compete in the next candidates for example.

i think it stings more for fabi.. he was +2 or 2.5 at the halfway point but was 1 point behind nepo so he kept pushing for wins and ended up losing. imagine if he knew 2nd is enough he wouldve taken quick draws

If Magnus decides to play the next candidates it will be a delight to watch him defeating people and would be one of the greatest return.

My theory: Magnus sets up goals for himself, currently 2900, and defending the world chess champion title, will waste tons of preparation, and time on it. He doesnt care about a mere WCC title, when he might be able to set a world record, and motivated about it.

It is quite crazy how Teimour was expected to get last in the candidates by some people, and was only half a point away from being in the WCC match. His comeback was really not talked about enough
