Garry made the best point. I think going for 2900 is more fulfilling and motivating for Magnus than defending the WCC.

Outstanding move.

I think Ian's sentiment captures the community's concern. Like when Tiger stopped playing and Golf went back to being Golf. There will be a revenue impact for players. Players need a greater voice in the needed evolution of FIDE.

Garry is right. It takes a lot to get to the top but even more to stay there. Magnus need to concentrate on what is best for him, not on what is best for others. Quoting some wise words: He literally doesn't care about other peoples opinions, and that is perfectly fine.

Good luck in getting to 2900 classical Magnus, I am sure you will need it in 5% of your and your opponents moves.

Magnus will now be like that old character in anime who is not the main Protagonist but still the strongest in the series.

imagine magnus being in the candidates two years later, that'll be a sight to see

This was bound to happen sooner or later. Let the man enjoy his life, let the others have the crown. Regardless of the title, it is very likely Magnus is going to remain the strongest player for years to come.

The only one that can stop carlsen is himself

Garry's making a smart point, Anish trolling, and Hikaru making it all about himself. Everything is at the right place. Except Magnus, who should have been at the top of Everest for many more years.

Just don't pull off a 'Bobby Fischer' on us, Magnus!

After a grueling 7 month long tournament, Magnus Carlsen managed to dethrone the World Champion

Naka's cope was off the charts, thinking that if he came second in the candidates then Magnus would have played

He's the best of this generation, best of all generation, but maybe we can never understand what it's like to be at the peak, so we can never understand him.

So taken by emotions as a fan. Feels like end of an era__ the Carlsen era, which I was so attached to. 😭😭😭. PS: Nakamura's delusional.

Brilliant move! Sacs his championship title for the attack on 2900 rating. There were a few champions but nobody reached that rating before, this guy knows very well how to stay motivated 👍🏻

I loved Garry's point
Magnus still and always will be the greatest chess player of all time for me, and I do understand his decision on not playing. World Champion doesn't mean best player anymore now
Good luck to Magnus on going for that legendary 2900 barrier

Wow! Bitter sweet. In some sense I sort of feel bad for Ding and Napo, because whoever wins, they'll ultimately walk away with the knowledge that they probably aren't the best in the world. I think that thought may have crossed Anatoli Karpov's mind a few times when Fischer refused to defend.

We all know who the worlds best player is whether he plays in the championship or not.

I'm actually more excited to see Ding vs Nepo. I think we will see a much more exciting chess match. Who cares if it's really for 2nd best, especially if we're gonna get to see some exciting chess.
