One year is the best measurement. That way you go through all of the seasons.

I ask myself: If a fire burns down my house, will I miss this piece? For sentimental stuff, I ask: If a fire burns down my house, will the memory that I attach to this piece be gone?
Both questions help me, but especially for the sentimental stuff it makes it obvious that the memories will stay a yways and I only have a small box left.

After my mother's passing I was the one who had to clear things out and settle the estate. A blessing for me was that "practical" was one of the qualities my mother most admired in people. If she said someone was practical that a compliment. When I was unsure about what to keep or donate or discard something that had belonged to my mother I would think about what she would say about it and the word "practical" would come to mind. For me when making decisions about what had belonged to someone else it was a help to know/think about what that person would have said about the item.

The whole “would I buy this again” question really put things into perspective and I will ask myself this question from now on when choosing what to keep and what to donate/sell.

Declutter questions:
1) do I have more than one of these?
2) is this a complete set?
3) do I actually use this, and if so when was the last time I actually can definitely pinpoint when it was used?
4) does this thing annoy the heck out of me?

On the go declutter q’s

1) one new thing in, two things out
2) if it breaks, throw it away immediately- never put it. Away to throw away later
3) when putting out the trash, what is lying around that I’ve missed? Magazines,

I'm about twice your age, and my thoughts at this point are pretty close to Swedish Death Cleaning. Will my son want this stuff when I clear out? So I'm asking him now, do you want this, cuz if you don't, its outta here. Its interesting, because thing's I'd have thought he cared about, he doesn't, and stuff I think is junk he wants, so go figure.

So funny! I am on a decluttering journey and have slowly been removing a whole lot of stuff and now clothing and cords look like clutter. Everything looks like clutter!

My favorite thing to remind myself when decluttering is that someone could be enjoying or using this instead of me storing for a just in case. It has been way easier to let stuff go knowing someone else can enjoy it!

#3 "Do I need this to be happy?" Oh, my. I felt my mind shift at this one. I've never come across this question and I have read multiple - OK, many multiple - books on decluttering and downsizing. Thank you! I think this one is a game changer for me.

I got myself into minimalism because my Grandma is a hoarder, my Mom went crazy with amount of clothes and my anxiety is out of the roof

I’ve come up with a list of questions that make sense to me and sometimes I need to combine them in order to get a clear picture on whether or not I should keep an item. They are: 1. Is this necessary and does it serve an actual, current function in my life? (Bonus question for things that are needed but may be seasonal - Will it be necessary in the near future?) 2. Does this contribute to my sense of well being? 3. Does this cost or compromise my peace and overall life flow - or does it enhance those things? 4. Does this keep me or distract me from my priorities and goals? 5. Do I want to spend time again to manage this particular item? 6. Can or should this be repurposed to substitute other items I can donate?

Before you start write a list from memory of everything you own and care about. When you start sorting, if it’s not on the list do you really need/want it?
