Unsupported hardware users will need to know if their CPU has SSE4.2 or SSE4a, you can download CPUID tool here

When Microsoft said 'they love linux' I didn't realise they loved them this much

My employer (A housing-related social service agency with an annual budget of 12 million $CDN) did a business case to upgrade 300 laptops and desktops that included retraining for Windows 11. The custom software which we use was included for evaluation as to compatibility and the cost of getting replacements since a majority of it is no longer supported by its vendors or the vendors are long gone. Total costs to retrain the staff and redevelop/acquire new software came to over 1.5 million dollars. Our annual IT budget is about $45, 000 (One FTE for support basically). This included replacing all hardware since none of it could meet the Windows 11 requirements (We still run T61 and Lenovo 490s for most of our staff. The decision was made to stay with Windows 10 and our existing software for the next 5 to 10 years.

SSE4.2 was first introduced in Intel Nehalem core in November 2008. The first AMD CPUs with SSE 4.2 support were launched in October 2011

So basically anything 2008 and later then?

Just run "system Information" and it will show the processor (CPU). Then just google or bing to search your processor model with the word sse (e.g. i7-7700hq sse) and usually the first result from intel will show whether it support Instruction Set Extensions sse4.2 or not. No need to install anything...

The 24H2 update is also removing Windows Mixed Reality Portal. Not just removing continued support for it, but removing it!
This will render any WMR VR device such as the very popular HP Reverb G2 - only useful for propping doors open.

These are hardware CPU features. If a piece of code is written to exclusively use it and you do not have it, good luck. It will likely crash. No bypass in that scenario. Very familiar with many hardware CPU features as a Gentoo user that builds everything from sources.

Don't worry too much guys, if your intel CPU is a core i series of some kind (except all LGA1366 chips) you have SSE4.2 support.
On the AMD side if you are rocking a phenom or later you should be fine.
So for most I bet this is a non issue, unless your pc is like 16 years old then you probably were looking to upgrade your hardware anyway.
Not necessarily defending this move, but this seems to affect a relatively small number of people.

"and no bypass will be available for it"
Challenge accepted.

from what i remember this is down to how software is compiled. i was messing around with an athlon XP system, and it didnt have SSE 2, and i was reading that by default, development software such as later versions of visual studio automatically compiled for computers with SSE 2, so most software post-2014 did not run on the system.

You know the "do something else" he was talking about might be move to a Linux distro. You can run that on almost any 64 bit processor.

So on one of my PC is an old i7 3820 (X79) and it does support SSE4.2 but I can't install windows 11 on it normally. So I could still install it bypassing TMP and secureboot, and update it to 24H2 just fine if all it's checking is for that, but it's running fine with Windows 10. Microsoft ended support for windows going back to windows 95 and people still use it.

Do you have a idea if this change could affect virtual machines?

There is always a way to bypass. The bad thing is that we should download unlocked ISOs which reduces the security.

Guys stop complain about Windows. Switch to a distro Linux and your pc will works for 15 or 20 years more. Windows its for people who needs specific program that don't run on Linux (professionnal or gamer). For the most of people, Linux is just perfect. If you want to have a Windows like because of habits, you have Wubuntu, Zorin os, Linux Mint etc...

Yeah, not doing Win11. And when 10 is done I'll just use Deb and Wine for every thing. its 80% compatible if not better. =D Audios MicroShaft!

So what is the go, is Micro$oft going to go with the previous minimum specifications (TPM, Secure boot, Bla Bla) or the newer minimum of SSE4a/SSE4.2, or are they going with both. They seem to relish in upsetting the apple cart.

I have a second gen Ryzen chip and it has the sse4.2 instruction set. It is not supported on the list and is running 23-2 win11 as of this writing.

Yap I have SSE4.2 on my unsupported PC that means I can bypass the other system requirements and install windows 11 24h2 just like windows 11 22 h2 and 23h2
