Training Heavy and Injury Risk

Injury Rate in Powerlifters

Sport Injury Rates

Powerlifting Injuries Comparatively Less Severe

Disk herniation in football was calculated as per athlete exposure in the study below (per training session or game).
From the first link, I took the mean frequency for injured/uninjured groups, and multiplied it by the total sample size of each to get 9653 total training sessions.
Then I took the 196 disk injuries reported in the study, divided by the athlete exposures, and multiplied by 1,000 to get an AE of 20.3
This is less than the 24.62 reported for football in the study.

I think most would agree that lifting heavy in itself is not dangerous, but far too often people increase weight too fast and end up doing damage that could’ve been otherwise avoided if they lifted more in line with their level of lifting prowess.

Meanwhile CrossFit has a 19% injury rate because they give 0 shits about form.

Just because other sports are more dangerous doesn't mean lifting heavy "isn't dangerous at all". Why don't you educate new lifters on the potential risks and ways to lift safe, instead of pulling studies out of context?

In the study, “treadmill, ” has a higher amount of injuries per 1000hrs than powerlifting does 😂😂

Is the statistic for soccer injuries considering fake ones?

My dad's friend died from trying to lift heavy. It was a blood vessel that popped in the head. Better to be safe than to act like a tough guy, know your limits.

Lifting heavy is more dangerous than sitting on my couch.

How to not get aneurysm from lifting weight?

I think heavy lifting is more likely to cause spinal, hip, and muscle deterioration later in life. I mean look at all these retired bodybuilders and lifters with bad back problems.

Rather than the number of injuries, it is the severity of injuries that makes powerlifting more dangerous than most of those sports that have “more injuries”.

Lifting is safe if and only if it is done properly. Bad form, bad programming, and lack of safety procedures (safety catches, spotters, etc.) can still cause severe injuries. As long as proper procedures are followed, lifting heavy is much safer than a lot of people think.

But how many years does it take to develop strength like Matt?

I would also add that it is more dangerous to be weak than strong.

Being strong is a central preventative measure to injury.

But what about chronic injuries? While you might hit your head playing Rugby that injury will go away not so sure if we can say the same about the injuries you suffer from in powerlifting.
