Clutch Control - Moving Off is something that many new drivers struggle with. Watch me moving off quickly in a manual car and showing you a secret method that makes it easy every time! Using this method you'll soon learn how to stop stalling when moving off.

Being a hypnotist as well as a driving instructor gives me a huge advantage over other instructors. It's very often the words that they use to describe the clutch control biting point that causes learner drivers problems. The very person who is trying to help you is making it harder for you to move off!

Moving off is NOT about lifting the clutch slowly. It's about finding the correct point, pausing the clutch pedal for 3 seconds and then lifting it. If you just lift it slowly, slowly, slowly then you'll annoy everyone around you by moving off like a snail. You can lift the clutch pedal as quickly as you want to the point and beyond the point so long as you pause for 3 seconds when it's in the correct place.

Finding that correct place isn't easy. It might sound simple but wait until you do it! It's different depending on whether you're on a hill or on a flat but with enough practise you'll be able to do it subconsciously and that's when it gets very easy.

Sorry that the video is dark. I am buying some new cameras soon and I need ones that perform better in low light conditions. If you have any suggestions for good cameras then let me know.

Wow thanks for simplifying such a simple thing overlooked by many licensed drivers as well as instructors, I think this is something that should be explained by every driving instructor, awesome video sir, you are an excellent teacher

You can do the same thing when changing gears except you don't need to pause on the bite point as long, helps me be more smooth with the upshifts. You add a bit of gas while on the bite point to help maintain speed. With downshifts you might need to hold it longer on the bite point if you have to slow down more.

I slowly lifted the pedal on my first few lessons until I learnt where the bite point was by muscle memory, but after that I went straight to it, held it and let go of the pedal. I sometimes do the same thing on hills if I don’t have time to put the hand brake on, and go from the brake to the gas as I’m just about at the bite point, but not high enough that the car moves.

In 2007/8 I was taught in a petrol and found it more natural when you set the gas before you find the bite. Had a huge gap of 15 years and I've only taken up lessons recently in a big diesel and my first three lessons I've stalled around 10 times! Instructor tells me to use the clutch only and don't bother with the gas. Can't do the clutch only start esp off there's any incline at all. It's just not natural. Have to go back to pushing on the gas slightly and then releasing the clutch slowly...

Thank you for showing this. Would you say this is because the pause allows the clutch and the flywheel of the engine to mesh together and become one?

I have been passed for a year and today i almost had an accident because the lights turned amber, this person maintained their speed as if to go through them, and then at the last minute braked and decided they weren't, i had to slam mine on and ended up stopping just behind them but a bit too close.

Do I need to use the gas pedal to do that?
