To understand why Trandoshan Jedis were so rare, it is important to understand Trandoshan culture and society. Trandoshans are large, bipedal reptilian sentient humanoids that originated from the planet Trandosha, whose society revolved around a culture of hunting. For most Trandoshans there are few activities better than the thrill of a hunt. Biologically, their rapid healing and regeneration ability makes them aptly suited for more perilous hobbies.
Trandoshans worshipped their goddess, the Scorekeeper, by going on hunts and certain acts that would increase their jagannath points. Trandoshans believed that once they died, the Scorekeeper would tally up their total points and determine where their place was in the afterlife. For non-Trandoshans, these acts would have appeared to be excessively aggressive, which has led many Trandoshans to take on careers such as bounty hunters, mercenaries, or slavers. A notable example that we know of is Bossk who was a famed bounty hunter during the era of the Clone Wars and the era of the Empire.
In fact for trandoshans the hunt was a rite of passage, which could involve a young trandoshan being tasked to hunt anything but the most dangerous of creatures. Typically they hinted frist wolves but their prey also included jedi padawans. Trandoshans had particularly poor relations with the Wookies, both having a violent and hateful history with each other. For Trandoshans. Wookie pelts were highly prized and therefore contributed to a large amount of jagannath points. Should Trandoshans be shamed or captured during a hunt, it would lower their points to zero, which means that their life would be forfeit in the eyes of the Scorekeeper. However, this could be corrected if they killed the person who shamed or captured them in the first place.
As such, given the highly aggressive and predatory nature of Trandoshan society and culture, it is clear that there is an issue of compatibility with the philosophies of the Jedi order. The Trandoshan concept of social hierarchy was built on the concepts of supremacy, in which one's social ranking is determined by their ability to kill and to hunt. For the Jedi Order, such social structures were outright rejected. To the Jedi Order, the ability to take a person's life is a situation of great gravity and should not be treated lightly. The Jedi Order, perceived all living beings to be equal in the eyes of the force and should therefore be treated as such. As such, for Trandoshans, such notions of equality and the sanctity of life, stands in contrast to their way of thinking and could be perceived as weak minded. It could also be interpreted that the hunting culture of the Trandoshans brushed far too closely towards the darkside of the force, given its indulgence in taking life
Therefore, if Trandoshans were to attempt to become Jedi, their own personal worldview would be affronted by the teachings of the Jedi Order. And for a Trandoshan to become a Jedi it would take a considerable amount of effort to purge almost all sense of their own historical and cultural identity in order to embrace the mantra of the Jedi Order. And even during situations where Trandoshan children did display an affinity for the Force, it was unusual for the Trandoshan parents to bring them to the Jedi Temple for training. Adult Trandoshans who grew up and were deeply socialised in the culture of the Trandoshans will undoubtedly find it difficult to betray their own heritage and would have undoubtedly found the Order’s more peaceful nature to be less than appealing.
In this regard, Master Sskeer was not only a rare sight, but something special given that he had excelled and became a fully fledged Jedi Master. While it would undoubtedly be difficult for Trandoshans to give up on a cornerstone of their societal norms it is not wholly impossible. As demonstrated by Master Sskeer, Trandoshans were also partly social creatures, and could therefore be molded to fit within the ideology of the Jedi Order. However, it remains unclear how much of Trandoshan culture stems from their biological urges and which elements are wholly social constructs. Given their biological predisposition to hunting, there is indeed an argument to be made that many elements of Trandoshan society stem from their inert nature. But safe to say, the rarity of Trandoshan jedi could most certainly be attributed to their societal structures. Any Trandoshans that wished to adopt the ways of the Jedi would be required...
