There is a Zen story about a man riding a horse that is galloping very quickly. Another man, standing alongside the road, yells at him, "Where are you going?" and the man on the horse yells back, "I don't know. Ask the horse."

Chariot represents the Human

The Horses: Represent the senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell) — they are powerful and can easily run wild if not controlled.

The Reins: Represent the mind, which directs and manages the senses.

The Charioteer: Represents the intellect (buddhi) — the decision-maker, who guides the mind and senses with wisdom and clarity.

The Passenger: Represents the soul (atman) — the true self, observing and experiencing the journey.

The message of this analogy is about self-mastery and balance:

When the intellect is strong and wise, it holds the reins (mind) tightly and directs the horses (senses) along the right path.

If the mind (reins) is loose or undisciplined, the senses (horses) pull the chariot (body) in different directions, leading to chaos and suffering

The soul’s journey becomes smooth and purposeful only when the intellect rules the mind, and the mind governs the senses with discipline.

Thank goodness for emotional control. I get why people don't add this one to the skill set but it makes a world of difference to be able to always be having a conversation rather than an argument.

There is this arc in the anime Frieren where the greatest fighter is revealed to litteraly shake in fear before every battles.
Fear is not an enemy. It wants to take control of you, but it still has strengths you can tap into.

Omg thank you!! I've read about the chariot a long time ago and felt inspired by it, along with DBT, but never had enough knowledge about the chariot to explain what I meant by it - I always sound way too woo-woo and out of it talking about these concepts. This is exactly the idea that I've tried to write in my journal over and over again 💕 I'm so ecstatic to hear you talk about it!!

I found this is what I do now with anxiety. It's become very helpful. It motivates and give information on what is good and not good for me. Motivates me to do good things and to avoid things that will cause me problems.

I just want to add that he didn’t finish talking about how you know which is in control right now, you or the emotion, and for me personally, I’d say it’s you when you actually care about the outcome.

We mistake the idea of, "Following your heart", with, "Giving yourself to your emotions", and it leads us to letting our emotions control us more often than not.

The beauty, mystery, and mystique about horses is that you ride them, you ride them and they do their share, AND when the rider is tired, looses control, and or sleeping they have intelligence to go on autopilot for a short while depending on the trajectory of the journey/ride to reach the desired destination if not reaching a safe spot for the horse and/or rider to rest and/or rejuvenate (food, water, and fodder) urban, rural, deserted and/or populated areas depending on the horse(plus and/or vs.)rider personality (introversion, extroversion, Myers-Briggs, etc…).

Dr. K says 'harness your emotions for both information and motivation'. I wonder how my fear can motivate me to do something, when it's telling me to do the exact opposite thing. Anyone who has an idea?

But you forget the part where extremely severe depression causes unbearable negative emotions that both do not make any sense and cannot be controlled to any significant extent

We have evolved to listen to our FEAR.
It is one of the biggest drivers. It is incredibly hard to be in control of our fear.

Love this analogy. Control is the answer.... But don't make that equal to denying the emotion or demonizing it...move it in the right direction and don't hurt yourself or others.

In the excellent book "The Happiness Hypothesis" by Jonathan Haidt, he calls it "elephant and rider". He isn't specifically labeling it "emotions", more like "instinctive responses". But basically the same idea.

my horses are ripping me apart limb by limb, then they eat my innards. Then they put my back together and repeat.
