I suppressed my energy so much as a kid that I would bite the inside of my mouth until it bled. It’s something I still do now, I’ve never been able to stop. Sometimes people will see the blood and ask me if my lip is bleeding and I’ll say oh yeah I accidentally bit my lip but really it’s a daily thing. I’m 41. Never had any help with ADHD but was horribly punished by my mother if I expressed any exuberance or talked “too much”.

I'm an ELT teacher and we are taught that unfortunately many teachers have conscious or unconscious bias and black and brown kids and migrant background Learners are often labeled as misbehaving instead of receiving deserved pegagogigcal attention and diagnosed with ADHD in order to receive pedagogical help and be taught skills to self-manage ADHD which takes years and a lifetime, the earlier a diagnosis is the better educational outcome and success. Many Black young ADHD Learners are let down by school system instead of receiving support and accomodations.

It's hard to know what's masking vs being considerate of others.

Whenever I am "on my best behaviour" it's impossible for me to make friends, as I'm suppressing my entire personality! And it's not really voluntary, it kind of just happens in situations where I'm uncomfortable or nervous or anxious to make a good impression.
However, I don't have the willpower to keep that up, so by the fourth day it comes peeking out and if it's well received I don't mask aside from making sure not to interrupt or talk too much, or knock their coffee over with my leg shaking.😊

I'm okay with that, it just means that I don't make friends quickly. Normally my friends come from my friends' friends, as they've seen my weirdness and I don't go into that "calm robot/most boring person in the world" mode that makes it impossible for people to get to know me.

That's basic human behaviour, not specific to ADHD. We all hide a lot of things in an attempt to fit in and copy those around us to some extent.

Will my issue when it comes to ADHD is that I've been fed excuses in the past why I can't do something because of it but I was offered no solution on how to deal with it besides pills that really didn't help and my psychological and social experiences. Not to mention it's discouraged my opportunities in the future because people keep using the age-old excuse that I can't do something because of this diagnosis and I really don't want to have to take pills to deal with it cuz I think that's ridiculous and in constructive because that's not going to fix the problem on top of that with mental other mental health issues that I'm probably unaware of have never been diagnosed about because I personally don't trust a lot of people in the medical field right now because people are literally trying to Bank off of people's mental health problems so they don't want you to get better they want you to get dependent on their services does breaking your bank and making you dependent on talking to these people I'm taking medicine that will probably just get you hooked on other drugs. Sometimes I think ADHD isn't real but at the same time I think there are certain parameters in the past that have induced ADHD and some young men so it's a conspiracy theory to think that somebody introduced this mental health disorder and that's why it's so abundant in young men and that can't be just a coincidence
