It's nice to see that AWACS will be around until 2035. My first job out of college was a software engineer working on the AWACS project in the mid-70's. There were about 300 software engineers and about an equal number of hardware engineers all housed in one large building next to Boeing Field in Seattle. Our desks were lined up right next to each other; there was only about 3 feet of space between each row.
We used a language called Jovial which was popular at the for developing real time systems. It was all done on IBM punch cards but there was an army of punch card operators who would do the typing of the program to the punch card machines. The onboard computer was based on 3 parallel IBM computers with core memory and high speed rotating drums. The radar system was an advance radar system that can declutter the environment well to provide ground targets; the hardware engineers were very proud of it. The software engineers just wanted it to work.

My grandpa was a electrical engineer for the E-3.
Sadly, he passed away before I was old enough to talk to him about it.

Every country these days knows how to build an aircraft, it's the same principles.

I was stationed at Kadena AB -82'-83' this is the very first aircraft that I worked on as a Environmental Control Systems mechanic. It has 13 independent air conditioning systems and can fly 12 hours without inflight refueling, I was fortunate to ride to Clark AB for 13 hours on a exercise and the cool thing is that it has bed cots for the flight crew to rest. It is truly a remarkable aircraft.

I watch these videos and think about how lucky we are to have the best Air Force and Navy in the world. I'm an Army guy and have mad respect for these guys. A special thank you to our Submariners. That is one job I could not do. BTW as this video says why can this plane only be made in the US? Did it ever answer that?

In the UK the E-3D Sentry is being replaced next year.
We are about 3 miles from where they are based at RAF Waddington.
The E-7 Wedgetail to be based at RAF Lossiemouth is set to succeed the E-3D Sentry aircraft once the Sentry retires at the end of 2022, after 31 years in operation.

I still miss the old B-52's since I worked on all three models which was being using during the Vietnam War and still have back problems because of the work done then. They was great aircraft and the D models was the ones used in Thailand and we kept them loaded with munitions so they was ready to fly constantly. I even got to fly on the G models as the aircraft was being rotated around at our satellite base.
