A 737 dumping flares, I thought I would never see the day

Bro I saw a clip where a drone landed on one of the Russian AWACS, that drone could easily bring C4 with it

They normally operate out of range of any known threats. That’s the trick.

Back in Vietnam my grandpa was on EC-121s, the AWACS of the day. The North sent 2 MiGs after them. They went from thousands of feet to tree top ASAP. The MiGs never saw them. Later that day when they went back on station 2 F-4s were sent as escort and they tucked up underneath close enough to show as a single blip on radar. Nothing happened but it's a great story.

How kids/we imagined it: AWACS with guns to fend off enemy fighters.

How it really is: Escorts, flares and other fancy ways.

I assumed the AWACS sees you first before you can attack it so they either flee from you or send interceptors at you..

I remember shooting one of these down in Ace Combat 5 felt kinda bad 😂

In my opinion the radar that can pick up targets that are hundreds of miles away would make them pretty difficult to intercept. They’ll find the attacker before the attacker has the slightest idea where they are then they’ll just fly away

The big pizza plate is the AWACS as noted. The flying I-beam is the AEW&C wedgetail, (Airborne Early Warning & Control?), their purposes and distribution differ.

You attack those when they are grounded. There is always a way if you find loopholes.

The Key word is DIFFICULT. Having flown the AWACS for years, it's very vulnerable & relies on the distance it can see adversaries THEN vector protective cover to its aid.
In the thousands of hours in the jet, I Personally only had fighter cover ONCE. That was when KAL007 was shot down by Soviet fighters. Also the 2 F-16's were assigned a CAP Role only AFTER the first day On Station when Russia brought the Alert status of their Fighters AND Missiles up to potentially offensive actions status.
Hopefully, the Pentagon changed their rules since that time.
