Femur length seems like the best explanation for differences in hip opening. Longer femurs require greater opening for balance, that's the insight here. Thanks, great graphics, great explanation.

As a 6’5 lifter I would say that strengthening your core is also extra important for long femurs because you will need more core strength to balance

These are the tips I needed for the last 20 something years. No one has been able to help me properly prior. THANK

I'm a personal trainer/fitness coach and i have long ass femurs and would always externally rotate my hips to release/pop them(since i was young warming up before the sports I played) and it became obvious to me that opening the hip to squat comfortably was the way to go for someone like me. My cue is ALWAYS to open the hips with mid stance, not narrow not too wide (I do classes too so I have to cue group's with this and immediately notice an improvement in majority of attendees technique). Once you figure out technique that works for you, squats are one of the best exercises. To add to this, using a band and strengthening hip flexors helps too.

Love the new animation much better understanding of it from different linear planes

You try explaining this to people with short femurs and think you’re making excuses

I've found that long legs are a blessing and a curse.
On the one hand my sqauts aren't the best. I can't go super deep without feeling like I'm loading up my spine or about to fall over. I've got to go fairly wide on my stance to comfortably go to parallel.
On the other hand I'm an absolute sniper with my kicks in Muay Thai. Long legs mean I can kick from deceptively far away for such a short guy.

Can you talk about proper form when using the bar, specifically the smith machine. I feel like it's pressing on my spine, and grip feels yucky/awkward

Everyone can stack plates on the hip thrust machine but squatting weight tells if you're actually strong.

Finding out I have long femurs made everything make so much sense. Front squats always felt weird and I had a few PE teachers scold me for not keeping my chest up. I got long bones, teach, I can't do it 😂😂😂

I think her problem was just focusing all her effort on that silly hip thrust machine over squatting. Because her squat looked good except for those insanely twisted wrists and something that looks more like low bar position.

This is me, I freaking hate squats. My ankles feel so tight and it is hard to be on balance. My femurs are long.

My torso is hilariously short (like one hand length) and my legs relatively long. But I'm also still only 5'4". And my arms are stubby. God did not want me to prosper on my lifts, but we move. 🤷🏿‍♀️
