The last time NASA astronauts flew to the International Space Station on an American spacecraft was nearly eight years ago. Since then, NASA has relied on Russia for rides. That could soon change. On Saturday morning, SpaceX will launch its new spaceship on a critical test flight, marking the first time a commercially built and operated spaceship, capable one day of carrying people, will travel to the space station. Mark Strassmann reports.

Delivered by Norah O’Donnell, Gayle King, John Dickerson, and Bianna Golodryga, "CBS This Morning" offers a thoughtful, substantive and insightful source of news and information to a daily audience of 3 million viewers. One thing that is not being talked about or publicized is that SpaceX and Boeing are team members in this entire project; they are NOT competitors. Crew Dragon and Starliner are both designed to integrate and fly on eachothers mating boosters. That means Starliner can fly on a Falcon 9 and Crew Dragon can fly on an Atlas V. The aerospace industry relies on professionalism and industry companies that compete with each other, to work hand-in-hand. This though, is a world first. Reason? The mission from its onset by NASA was to assure 100% mission success through cross compatibility and double redundancy between BOTH systems. My hat is off to both companies and all the subcontractors that make this all happen. We are proud of you.

You know, if you kept your reports like this and away from politics, I'd consider you an actual news source.

It's so cool how Russia and America work together in space, seemingly no matter what's going on politically. It illustrates the difference between scientific and government motives perfectly.

This isn't the first time a crewed ship has been tested since the Space Shuttle Program Ended. The Orion Spacecraft launched in 2014 and we haven't heard much how that mission went.

It's like they forgot we even had a space program lol

Hahaha, I like how NASA and the US take pride over something they had nothing to do with. Elon made it happen, no one else.

Astronauts going up into space will be like: "Starliner is more like the nice soccer-mom van; while Crew-Dragon like a convertible"

ahhh...so efficient. Look at the size of this thing compared to the shuttle. Although, I guess the shuttle was bringing cargo out there, this is just a space taxi.
