SpaceX is a nearly perfect example of why private industry almost always wins out over public programs in terms of cost benefit and efficiency. In the time NASA took to build the over budget, years late, and still unfinished SLS, SpaceX has designed, tested or flown four separate vehicle designs in over 80 successful mission to space, setting major spaceflight milestones with each. Not to mention all at a price tag significantly cheaper than NASA could ever dream to accomplish. I think Congress and NASA are currently in a position with SLS in which the program has cost so much time and money that it would be pretty much impossible to let it go at this point. Want to get the US to the Moon and Mars fast? Give SpaceX the budget for SLS and they will get us there in a quarter of the time at a quarter of the price.
