5 Things You DON'T Want to Do When Eating SUSHI in Japan

Sushi has a long history in Japan and because of it, there are actually many rules on how to eat them properly. I personally think that you don’t have to follow everything perfectly, but there is one thing that I most certainly recommend you to avoid to simply enjoy the taste of sushi more.

It is… “Putting soy sauce on the rice.” Why?

1. You could accidentally put too much soy sauce
2. The rice will fall apart
3. Some rice might fall into the soy sauce plate and it will look dirty

Putting too much soy sauce on will change the original taste of the sushi. Just a little bit on the tip of the topping is usually recommended. The best way to do so is to first tilt the sushi sideways and then pick it up.

By the way, there are some sushi called 軍艦 Gunkan that has 海苔 nori seaweed wrapped around it. But these kinds are impossible to tilt because the toppings will fall off. In this case, you should use the がり Gari sliced vinegared ginger that always comes together with sushi as a brush to apply soy sauce on the top.

By the way, Gari are originally meant for refreshing your mouth in between eating different kinds of sushi.

“Use the ginger as a brush.”

Me: *Has been dipping the ginger slices and eating them with the sushi.* 😳

I feel like it's for the best that I never vacation in Japan. Knowing me I'll probably offend someone just by existing.

My sushi is always swimming in soy sauce like a big chunky seal in the Antarctic Ocean before I eat it, so thanks for the heads-up if I'm ever in an authentic sushi restaurant

The pickled ginger is primarily meant as a palate cleanser to be eaten between different kinds of sushi (basically to 'reset' your taste buds), he is just giving a tip how to apply soy sauce to the gunkan in an elegant way. If you're not getting high end sushi where the chef prepares it in front of you, you can just eat it as you like IMHO. Otherwise it's really very disrespectful or at least it's just a pity if you drown out the more delicate and complex flavors with too much soy sauce. But if you like it that way, you do you.

I drench my sushi in soy sauce before eating it, it's just a must😂

This has been blown out of proportion for Americans, the vast majority of Japanese people (in my experience) could care less about how you eat sushi as long as you're not throwing it across the restaurant.

I actually love your accent, it gives your English a subtle refinement, and sometimes makes for clearer pronunciations. It's so relaxing to listen to your commentary.

Personally, I think regular soy sauce is too salty even to dab on lightly. I really like the taste and mouth feel of the raw fish, especially tuna and salmon. They don't need anything extra
