my old school did that, I was in kindergarten! Tho the teacher's costumes are very detailed and scared the life out of me, after I threw all the beans I have to run inside the classroom to hide under the table...yup definitely a core memory...

People in Inazuma have this ritual every time there's a holiday, or they move, or get sick, or whatever, where they throw beans around and chant:
"Fortune beans are falling down, send the oni out of town. Fortune in, oni out. Fortune in, oni out!" ...Ugh, the chant gets worse every time I hear it, but the streets full of beans, with my allergies? Total disaster.

The demons count the beans, for some reason they cannot resist counting beans . That's gives the child time to run while the demon is counting .

Oni out fortune in it was a term used in the Japanese game toukiden 2 you fight demons and on setsubun you would greet people with oni out fortune in and the slayer oni in fortune out the slayers are the demon hunters Like from demon slayer
