5 Things You DON'T Want to Do When Eating SUSHI in Japan

Surprisingly, it's actually considered appropriate to eat sushi with your hands in Japan. Eating almost everything else with your hands is considered rude, but why is sushi allowed?

When sushi became a popular dish during the Edo period (1603~1868), they were about 3~5 times bigger than the ones we know today. This is because sushi was originally a kind of fast food served at street vendors and because of their huge size they were too big to eat with chopsticks.

So the people of Edo would just grab them with their hands to eat, just like how we would eat Onigiri rice balls or hamburgers with our hands today.

The sushi today is actually served by cutting the original Edo-sized toppinginto 2 or 3 pieces to make it easier to eat. This size of sushi was created long after Japan westernized in the early 20th century. This is when it finally became possible to eat them with chopsticks but even now because of its original culture, it is considered appropriate to eat with your hands.

sushi restaurants will even give you a damp cloth to clean your fingers with while you eat

My friends and I tried making sushi just yesterday and were discussing about how small Temarizushi were in comparison to the other kinds, particularly Onigiri. This was after we accidentally first used an entire nori leaf to roll a maki. Nedless to say, it was gigantic. To learn, that it was probably closer to its original form, will make our little mishap even funnier to tell.^^

Interesting! Is there any place that still serves the original Edo-size sushi?

I wonder if this is why a typical place serves two pieces to an order

My favorite part of Japanese food eating etiquette is that slurping is a compliment to the chef. Awesome. Every time my mom gets on my case for slurping, I say "in Japan, slurping is polite!"

This makes me very happy to hear, as I probably won't master eating with chopsticks anytime soon. 🥳

Now I can say I’m being authentic when in reality I’m just to lazy to use chopsticks for sushi.
