This video needs to go viral. The number one excuse I have heard for thirty years from my musician friends is that they "just don't have the time to practice." Bologna! You had time to: Get drunk, get high, go to bars, watch tv, play videogames, play sports, work on your car, etc., etc. It's the lamest, laziest excuse ever, and then they always complain about not improving or having trouble keeping up. Excuses are just a lazy man's way of getting out of things that are difficult and take effort. Thank you, Stephen. This video needed to be made.

As my uncle always says; it's not about how talented you are, it's about playing correctly!

I played the drums up until 7th grade I just didn’t like the music but liked the drums.

Fast forward 8 years all my favorite songs are the ones I used to practice.

I started jamming with a friend for the first time ever, and now I have two drum sets and started a band.

Alot of excuses not to play. I work, have a family, kids, grandkids. I play whenever I get the notion. My wife don't say much. I'll hear something in a comercial, a movie, or listening to vids like this. I just jump back there and do it. People involved with other who are musical tend to let it happen. Those who are in less control of their lives will have more reasons to not play when the urge presents itself. Last Sunday I played all day. With breaks. Was 9:30pm that nite when I stopped. Your videos are smart. Thanks!🤘

Good thoughts👍
I'm definately in a rut, and have been for some years now. It's been a downward negative spiral where I haven't played anything these last two years, mostly bacause lack of time, and that has affected my motivation. A lot has been going on. Obligations as family time, work, renovating the house. But also health problems and surguries. So my motivation to practice just isn't there. When I have some time left, I'm usually exhausted, or my youngest son sleeps, and I can't play because my drums are under his bedroom in the basement.

I can relate to some things here. I don't have any other musicians to play with. Haven't played live for many years. I miss that.
Here in Sweden there isn't really a culture for shed, or jams, if you're not in the same band.

I do have favourite bands and drummers that I love listening to, but I'll never learn to play their songs. That's never gonna happen.
I don't have that required talent. My bang for each practiced hour buck is really bad. I have way too many weaknesses to fix. If I even can fix them.

Thanks Stephen for this motivation speech. I was in a drastic car wreck with a truck pulling a bobcat Dec. 18, 1998. It had put me in a coma for half a year. My problem start's with picking the correct time too play, so I won't wake up everyone in the house. Thanks again man, R3N

Agreed, you have to make the time! My problem is I hate practicing alone. I tend to wait til band practice to play.

I really agree with the first point. If you really care about Drums you are going to do anything necessary to make time to practice. Over the past few years I organized my working schedule in ways that I could get two hours of daily practice easily. I let my boss and co-workers know that I really care about drums and they should avoid giving me tasks that will take up my practice time. And they totally understood and were cool with it. I even dumped a girlfriend because she was keeping me away from drums.

I agree completely with your point about talent! This is the single biggest hurdle as a teacher these days.i find myself repeating things like " good playing is no accident" .
Over and over again.
Great work with your channel!

Thanks Stephen. Another great video. I agree with the making time and making drumming a priority.
Another great motivator for me is seeing a live band. Even just a local cover band for free. Really makes me want to play.

Amen to the favourite band one. Dream Theater and Mike Portnoy got me addicted to drums. Now I'm a Ringo man.

This is an amazing channel and I am on board completely. Thanks for all the help. It's really helped me so far already.
I started back on learning drums because my brother, my friends and me are making songs together and I'm the "drum guy." I just watched your video on what beginners should practice and it's really helpful. Effective, yet simple, as most really helpful information on learning is.

Writing music is very underrated! It's not just about making good music, it's about being creative and having fun 💯

All of those points are really good and should definitely be taken more seriously by probably all of us. I don't agree on the non-existence of natural talent though. I believe everybody can get decent but there's still people that just have an easier time. I just spent half a year with 3 of the best music teachers I could get in my country, practiced a shit ton, motivated as hell but didn't nearly reach the goals my teachers or I expected from me. I'm not giving up, neither should anybody else, but i think there's also special talent that needs to be found a nurtured. (Not mine though, lol)
