Asymptotes of Rational Functions

Missed the previous lesson?

Algebra II on Khan Academy: Your studies in algebra 1 have built a solid foundation from which you can explore linear equations, inequalities, and functions. In algebra 2 we build upon that foundation and not only extend our knowledge of algebra 1, but slowly become capable of tackling the BIG questions of the universe. We'll again touch on systems of equations, inequalities, and functions...but we'll also address exponential and logarithmic functions, logarithms, imaginary and complex numbers, conic sections, and matrices. Don't let these big words intimidate you. We're on this journey with you!

About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything

Thank you! Khan academy is helping me identify and fix all the holes left from my high school algebra career (they are many) and for the first time I'm really understanding the theory behind it! Understanding it is really making me enjoy math and giving me confidence that I'll be able to handle more advanced courses c:

I learn more from your videos than my prof. I can barely even understand a word he says. I don't go to his lectures anymore instead I skip and watch your videos. Thank you.

These videos literally prepare me for tests more than the actual in-class lessons do. God bless you, Khan Academy. I literally can't thank you enough.

Think of it this way: add in the term of the same degree to the numerator with a coefficient of 0. So for example, (x+1) / (x^2) would become (0x^2 + x + 1) / (x^2). Horizontal asymptote is the coefficients of the highest degree terms, (numerator / denominator). 0 divided by any # is 0. So in the example, (0x^2) / (x^2) is 0/1 which is 0. So the horizontal asymptote is y=0.
